The impact of education on a student is long-lasting. Paulo Freire’s teachings have not only changed the way I learn but have also equipped me with the knowledge to provide an inclusive and empowering classroom environment. Some key items from the course that have resonated with me are the importance of critical pedagogy and culturally sustaining pedagogy.
Using critical pedagogy in the classroom encourages a learner to be critical and challenge social injustices. Rather than using a traditional ‘banking method’ of teaching, the use of dialogue in the classroom increases engagement, inclusivity, and empowers students. The use of this method throughout the course was intriguing. I enjoyed reading the views of my peers on various topics because they gave me new perspectives.
Learning about the use of culturally sustaining pedagogy and project-based learning has given me a new perspective on approaching sensitive topics in the classroom. Learning about this approach has helped me reflect on my personal experiences and how they have impacted me throughout my life. I recognize the importance of cultural awareness both in and out of the classroom. The cultural identity of a student can make an impact educationally and socially. Having a culturally sustaining classroom creates recognition and acceptance among everyone. It values diverse perspectives and equips students to become advocates for themselves and others.
The following images are a representation of my growth as a person and an educator. In this series of watercolor paintings, I capture the transformative journey of self-discovery and growth I experienced throughout this course. Through brushstrokes and hues, each piece tells the story of my personal growth, knowledge, and confidence.
The first painting portrays a flower, yet to bloom, under the protection of a shady tree. The cloudy sky symbolizes my initial insecurity and lack of confidence. Transitioning from a business background to the education field was intimidating. The ambiance represents the fear and uncertainty that loomed.
As the series progresses, the second painting reveals the flower is starting to bloom. The sun is visible halfway on the horizon. The sun represents the teachings and knowledge throughout the course. The flower in bloom means becoming more receptive to the sun. This image represents my personal growth and the emergence of a positive outlook.
Finally, the last painting shows many fully bloomed flowers standing tall and vibrant. The flowers represent the students from the course, the empowerment aspect of critical pedagogy, and the diversity aspect of cultural identity. The flowers bask in the sun's golden light as it begins its descent below the horizon signifying the end of the course. The absence of clouds in the sky represents clarity and confidence. As the sun sets, so does the journey, marking the end of the course, while celebrating the strength and resilience I have discovered within myself.
Through these watercolor pieces, I invite the viewer to join me in a visual narrative of personal growth, from the shadows of insecurity to the blossoming of self-assurance. May my journey inspire others to embrace their own transformative paths and find beauty in the journey of self-discovery.
