Our inspiration came from our kids who are studying geography and biology. For school projects they needed to collect data using different sampling regimes (some of which were based on different geographic characteristics), create maps, measure fields and the distances between objects and features.   

After reviewing the textbooks we realised that some of the geographic investigative skills taught to GCSE and IB Geography students are also used by GIS analysts, yet students are not introduced to GIS. Since we live in a digital society, where geography is central to everything we do, we figured it would be fun to put together some courses for GCSE and IB geography students so that they can be introduced to the essentials of GIS.  

The aim of the LearnWithGIS courses are to make geography more fun and enrich the student's learning experiences.  We embarked on putting together some courses so that students could investigate, for themselves, the topics that are covered during class. 

We cannot cover everything but over time we hope to add more info.  In the meantime.....

In the upcoming months we will be releasing a variety of courses, all of which are highlighted on the various pages here. But since many GIS programmes can be overwhelming, and there are many aspects about geographic data, we created a GIS essentials course to get you started. 

The GIS essentials course is comprised of a set of modules where students can learn the essentials of GIS while getting familiar with working with industry standard software.  To do so you will need to purchase your own student license. It is well worth it!  Please note that if you have an Apple computer you may have issues installing the software.

First we will release the GIS essentials courses followed by the other geography modules covering natural environment, population & settlements and economic development.
