Think Ink 3! Calligraphy Event
Photographer: Anonymous

On March 9, 2016, an astounding 80 attendees participated in the Calligraphy event of the Japanese Culture Series.

The event started off with a brief lecture by the University of Calgary's Akiko Sharp on the history of calligraphy and various styles. The attendees were then able to pick up a brush and paper and try the art for themselves, learning the technique and stroke order to write characters such as "eternity" (永), "spring" (春), and "love" (愛). 10 students visiting the Werklund School of Education from the Hokkaido University of Education were in attendance and used their own experience practicing Japanese calligraphy to kindly teach and guide event participants in the art.

Feedback on the event was incredibly positive. Many of the participants expressed that they thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to personally try writing calligraphy, and were also glad to interact with the visiting students from Japan.

This was the second event in the 2016 Japanese Culture Series organized by the School of Linguistics, Languages and Cultures at the University of Calgary and generously funded by the Mitsui Foundation of Canada.
