Week 4 - Application

Week 4 Summary:

This week we spent some time reviewing and practicing 'Interpretation' from Week 3. This is important because we then used the handout from Week 3 (with answers) to practice making personal applications in our groups. The lecture part of the lesson a few questions about application: Why Application?, What is Application?, How do I make Applications?, and What makes a good Application?.

Under "Why Application?" we discussed John 13:17, "If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.". The bible expects us to know and obey the truths (principles) that are taught to us in scripture. Continuing to answer the question, "Why Application?", we also brought up that we still need to further narrow down all of the information to get to a manageable truth so that we can then apply this to our lives. We examined the 'Too Much Info...Graphic' to help us understand the scope of out study method.

Under "What is Application?" we reviewed how important 'Application' is in this method. This is the stage where we actually put the principle into action and allow it to change our lives and behavior--and make us more like Christ.

It was under the "How do I make Applications?" section where we introduced the SPECS acronym that is designed to help us make strong applications of the principle to our lives.

      • S = Sin, is there any sin that I need to confess or avoid?

      • P = Promise, is there a promise here that I need to claim or thank God for making?

      • E = Example, is there an example her that I need to follow? Is there a life worth copying--the author (Paul), Jesus?

      • C = Command, is there a command that I need to obey?

      • S = Stumbling Block, is there something that I am doing that I need to let go of? Am I doing something that is holding myself or someone else from growing closer to God?

The 'S.P.E.C.S.' acronym helps us look for a specific way to make a life changing commitment to become more obedient and Christ-like.

Finally, in our "What makes a good Application?" section, we reviewed the 'S.A.M.' goals.

      • S = Specific - Are the applications clear and understandable?

      • A = Attainable - Is the application realistic?

          • 'I will never be angry again'. - Yeah, right--good luck with that!

          • 'I will spend 5 hours in prayer a day'. - Ok, George Mueller!

      • M = Measurable - are the applications quantitative? Can I hold myself accountable to this application?
