The harnessing of technology to boost the quality of teaching and learning across the school-wide learning commons forms the foundation of the entire learning community. So, while we may have a computer lab and various stations where students can work on projects, these same students have their own preferred devices that they use both in and out of school. While we may think of a physical space in the school designated the library learning commons, there also exists what we term as the Virtual Learning Commons (the former library website) that is a foundational element of the entire school becoming a learning community. Below are some central ideas to use in the construction of such learning spaces..
We often think of the makerspace as a physical location in the school. However, create your own virtual makerspace that is available to the adults and students 24/7 as long as there is an Internet connection. David Loertscher and his graduate students at San Jose State University have created this example so you can create one at your school or district level.
The SAMR model created by Dr. Reuben Puentadorad is widely known and is a foundational concept for technology in any school-wide learning commons. Here is an informative article about this model to remind all of us about its role in education:

Here is a research study about the state of technology in education with some major suggestions for its use:
Scott McLeod and Julie Graber have created a major model of technology integration deeper learning, greater student agency, more authentic work, and rich technology. Their book and interactive website evolves as the authors and users of the protocol and the recent book (2019) develops a systematic way of integrating technology to boost teaching and learning. Their website is at: http://dangerouslyirrelevant.org/resources/4-shifts-protocol
Hargadon presents the findings of a major study in the role of technology in learning. However, the best part of this report is a method to build a conversation in a school about how to make technology the foundational element of a learning community. at:
