Through Learn & Earn, youth are placed with community-based organizations where they are hired, trained, and assigned to a worksite for the summer. For many participants, Learn & Earn is their first job experience; for others it has become their consistent summer job.

Summer jobs are great for kicking off professional tracks and learning new skills, but for the employees who, despite all odds, go above and beyond, it's a chapter that often changes their lives forever. The exceptional employee, in this case, is Lynnise Barham.

After being accepted into the Learn & Earn program with Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Lynnise was connected to a permanent job at Fudge Farm. Regardless of catching three buses, crossing one bridge, and dropping her four-year-old daughter off every morning at daycare, Lynnise was always on time and ready to jump head-first into her duties.

As a result of her great work, Lynnise's employers Walt Rainey and Molly Rainey, stepped in to support the future of her career in a unique way. In August of 2020, the Rainey's created a fundraiser to connect Lynnise to a reliable vehicle that will make her commute to work, daycare, and classes at CCAC, much easier.

The Summer Learn and Earn program is a unique opportunity for rising high school juniors and seniors in Boston to earn money while taking college-level courses. The program also includes team meetings, academic coaching, and college readiness activities (such as campus tours and financial aid information sessions).

This symbiotic cycle of earning and learning is a pattern that you often see in the resumes of the most senior folks at notable companies. This is because it is far less likely to go all the way from the bottom to the top of the career tracks by staying at the same place: to do so you have to completely luck out with growth, opportunity and timing.

For example, being an engineer at a big tech company for some time gives you the experience and financial padding to take a risk by being the CTO of a start-up: most of your total compensation is imaginary money for all but one side of a twenty-sided dice roll. However, doing this can supercharge your learning. Conversely, being one of the first managers in a scale-up gives you the opportunity to learn at a frenetic pace if you can take much less pay than you could command elsewhere. However, the experience that you could gain through a successful growth journey, raising money, taking part in M&A and exiting could line you up for a Director or VP role at a much larger company later. Your learning contributes to your future earning, and your earning can create space for learning.

1. Get your Malcolm Gladwell 10K hours getting your teeth kicked in! Consider all career changes as failing forward and value the experience. Save your commissions and don't buy stupid stuff. It will pay off later

4. Learning shows up in many unexpected places: customers, other salespeople, bosses of the boss, HQ visits, pre-sales engineers, observe who is doing it right and be a sponge to those people! When you have the right attitude and are willing to do all the crap jobs in the spirit of learning, you will be prepared for the long haul.
