Lédger® Live, now presented by Ledger as Ledger Wallet™, is the software interface used with compatible Ledger hardware wallets. The hardware device is the cold-storage component: Ledger states that private keys remain offline on the hardware device, while the application provides the interface for managing supported digital assets.
A cold wallet differs from a conventional software-only wallet because the private keys are kept on a dedicated hardware device rather than exposed directly to an internet-connected computer or phone. Ledger describes its hardware wallets as devices designed to keep private keys offline and protected by a Secure Element. Crypto assets themselves remain on their respective blockchains; the hardware wallet protects the keys used to control them.
The Lédger® Live application acts as the management interface, while the compatible Ledger hardware wallet provides the key-security layer. After connecting and unlocking the device, users can use the application to view supported accounts, monitor portfolio information, and prepare transactions. Transactions can then be reviewed and approved using the hardware device.
Ledger's official instructions explain that users can connect their hardware wallet, unlock it with the device PIN, open the application, and use the Manager to install supported cryptocurrency applications. Once an appropriate application is installed, users can add accounts and manage supported assets.
One of the principal advantages of a hardware wallet is keeping private keys isolated from everyday internet-connected devices. This can reduce exposure to certain remote threats compared with keeping private keys exclusively in a software wallet. Ledger also emphasizes that users maintain self-custody rather than giving their private keys to an exchange or other intermediary.
Ledger Wallet supports portfolio management and a range of services, including buying, swapping, staking, and other Web3-related functionality, although available services and regional availability can change.
Start by downloading the official Ledger application from Ledger's website. Connect your compatible hardware device and follow the instructions displayed by the application and the device. If creating a new wallet, carefully record the recovery phrase according to the device instructions and store it securely offline.
Your recovery phrase is extremely sensitive. Never enter it into a website, online form, email, chat, or unsolicited support application. Never send it to someone claiming to be Ledger support. Anyone who obtains the recovery phrase may be able to control the associated assets.
Lédger® Live provides the software experience, while a compatible Ledger hardware wallet provides offline private-key protection. Together, they offer a self-custody approach that combines convenient portfolio management with hardware-based security. Always download software from official Ledger resources, verify transactions on your hardware device, and keep your recovery phrase private and offline.
