Lédger® Live is the companion application for compatible Ledger hardware wallets, while your Secret Recovery Phrase serves as the fundamental backup for your wallet. Ledger explains that the Secret Recovery Phrase can restore access to the accounts associated with a wallet if the original device is lost or unavailable.
When setting up a Ledger device, the recovery phrase should be recorded carefully and stored offline. Ledger recommends keeping this information private because anyone who obtains the phrase may be able to restore the wallet and access its assets. The recovery phrase should never be entered into Ledger Live, a website, email, messaging application, or any other internet-connected device merely to create a backup.
Ledger Live provides an interface for managing supported crypto accounts and connecting to a Ledger hardware wallet. It does not function like a traditional online account with an email-based password reset. Ledger states that the Live application works with the user's Ledger device to manage crypto assets and accounts.
For a traditional offline backup, keep your recovery phrase on the physical recovery sheet supplied with your Ledger device and store it somewhere secure and protected from unauthorized access. Ledger describes the recovery sheet as a physical backup used to record the 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase.
Ledger also offers optional recovery solutions for users who want alternatives or additional redundancy. Ledger Recover is an optional service that creates an encrypted backup associated with verified identity. Ledger says the backup is created from encrypted entropy, fragmented into three pieces, and stored using independent security infrastructure.
Ledger also describes Ledger Recovery Key as a PIN-protected, offline backup option that complements the standard recovery sheet rather than replacing it.
These options are different from simply saving a recovery phrase digitally. A screenshot, cloud document, email draft, or text file containing your recovery phrase can expose it to unauthorized access and should be avoided.
Keep your recovery information offline and private. Verify every transaction on your Ledger device before approving it, use only official Ledger software, and avoid links from unsolicited messages or advertisements.
If someone claiming to be Ledger support asks for your complete Secret Recovery Phrase, PIN, or private keys, do not provide them. Genuine support should not require your secret recovery information.
Your Secret Recovery Phrase is the most important backup information associated with your self-custody wallet. Keep it private, protect it from physical damage and unauthorized access, and never publish it online.
