Lédger® Live provides the software environment used with compatible Ledger hardware wallets, while wallet recovery depends on how your wallet was originally backed up. A Secret Recovery Phrase is the primary backup for a self-custody wallet. Ledger explains that this phrase can restore access to the private keys associated with a wallet, which makes protecting it one of the most important responsibilities for a crypto holder.
If you still have your Ledger device and know its PIN, you can normally continue managing your accounts through Ledger Live without performing a recovery. If your device is lost, damaged, or replaced, recovery may involve restoring the wallet on another compatible Ledger device using the original Secret Recovery Phrase.
A Secret Recovery Phrase should be kept offline and private. Ledger specifically warns users never to enter the phrase into a computer or smartphone or share it with another person.
When restoring a wallet, use only the official Ledger application and follow the instructions displayed by the Ledger device. Carefully verify each recovery word and never use a phrase supplied by another person or a website. If a website, email, pop-up, or supposed support representative asks you to type your recovery phrase online, stop immediately.
Ledger also offers Ledger Recover, an optional ID-based service designed to provide a backup for wallet access. According to Ledger, the service encrypts and splits a version of the key into three fragments, with each fragment secured separately. Recovery requires identity verification and restoration to a Ledger device.
Ledger states that Ledger Recover can be accessed through Ledger Live. Its current information describes recovery as requiring a Ledger device, identity verification, and the appropriate Ledger Recover account. Compatibility and availability can vary by device and region.
Ledger also offers a separate Ledger Recovery Key for certain compatible touchscreen devices. It is a PIN-protected physical backup designed to provide another recovery option and does not replace the importance of maintaining secure backups.
Never send your Secret Recovery Phrase, PIN, private keys, or Ledger Recover security codes to anyone. Ledger has warned about phishing campaigns designed to trick users into entering their 24-word recovery phrase on fake websites.
Download Ledger software only through official Ledger channels and verify the domain before proceeding. Avoid unofficial recovery tools, browser extensions, advertisements, or support accounts that request confidential wallet information.

Use official Ledger software, follow instructions shown on your hardware device, and keep sensitive recovery information private.
