Remake Learning Days (RLD) is a celebration of innovative experiences and opportunities for youth to develop their sense of creativity, perseverance and curiosity. Remake Learning Days is a festival of events hosted by a variety of organizations, such as schools, museums, libraries, after school organizations, early child care centers, parks, universities, media centers, tech startups and more. These events are designed to be hands-on, relevant and engaging educational experiences for youth of all ages (pre-K through high school) and their families, caregivers and educators. The majority of events are free and open to kids of all ages.

Events are organized by different learning themes such as: Arts, Maker, Outdoor Learning, Science, Technology and Youth Voice. In addition, there are Professional Development sessions for school, out-of-school, child care and non-traditional educators. Background: As a signature program of Remake Learning, Remake Learning Days (RLD) began in the spring of 2016 in Southwestern PA as a celebration of innovative experiences and opportunities for youth to develop their sense of creativity, perseverance and curiosity and share in their learning experiences with their parents and caregivers. Over the years, Remake Learning Days has taken off with over 15 festivals across Pennsylvania, throughout the United States, and internationally.

RLD showcases regional learning opportunities with festival events hosted by schools, museums, libraries, after school organizations, early child care centers, parks, universities, media centers, tech startups and more. Events are designed to be hands-on, relevant and engaging educational experiences for youth of all ages (pre-K through high school) and their families, caregivers and educators. Role Overview: From October 2023 to July 31, 2024, the RLD Across PA Coordinator will be an independent contractor who supports and reports to the Remake Learning Days Producer and Co-Producer while managing logistics for RLD Across PA. The person filling this position should reside within PA. They will have the opportunity to visit a variety of learning environments and engage and interact with educators, youth and caregivers across Pennsylvania. RLD Across PA takes place from May 2-22, 2024.

In June 2019, the passage of House Bill 3 by the 86th Texas Legislature added half-day formula funding for school systems that add up to 30 instructional days to any of their elementary schools starting in the 2020-2021 school year. This initiative is called Additional Days School Year (ADSY). Funding for ADSY is available to campuses that meet the requirements below.

ADSY addresses summer learning loss, which can have a profound effect on students from low-income backgrounds. The cumulative impact of summer learning loss has been shown to create a gap of up to three grade levels for low-income students by the fifth grade.

Research from RAND has shown that the impact of summer learning loss can be eliminated if academic instruction is offered for three to four hours a day for five to six weeks. Additionally, when comparing students in the US to those of top performing countries on the PISA exam, we see that many of those countries have shorter summer breaks, and all have more instructional days per year (as many as 47 additional days in countries like South Korea). This suggests that holding more instructional days leads to academic achievement, however there has not previously been additional funding for lengthening the instructional year in Texas until the passage of HB 3.

The ADSY Planning and Execution Program supports LEAs with the planning, program design, and change management necessary to effectively add instructional days to the school calendar. Participating school districts and open-enrollment charter schools engage in a year-long planning process with a learning community and approved technical assistance vendors before implementing ADSY.

Meanwhile, the co-teachers of an Advanced Placement calculus class at Grandville High School in Grandville, Mich., where school has been called off for seven days so far this winter, are posting assignments online, as well as instructional videos, to keep students on track.

The 50,000-student Henrico County school system, near Richmond, had a surprise weeklong break from classes in mid-January when the district called four snow days the week of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. School was closed yet again for two days last week after another storm hit.

However, a 2008 study of Maryland public schools, published in the Journal of Education Finance and Policy, came to a different conclusion. It found that as snow days accumulated they did have a negative effect, particularly at the elementary level, on student performance on state reading and math assessments.

At Grandville High School in Michigan, Ms. Triezenberg, the AP calculus co-teacher, said that for the past few years, she has used online technology to provide learning resources for her students, to keep them up to date with the material.

The Grandville district has made a big push to enhance its use of technology. The district now provides its 4th through 12th graders with Chromebooks. Pupils in kindergarten through grade 3 will be receiving iPads.

Gibault Catholic High School in Waterloo, Ill., uses an online learning-management system that works much like an academic social network, allowing students to access resources and interact and collaborate with teachers and fellow classmates.
