My teaching and research backgrounds lend themselves to teaching a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses related to health inequalities, health policy, social epidemiology, aging, population mental health, and research methods. I approach all such courses through a public health perspective, teaching social and structural determinants of health and instilling the field’s core values of disease prevention and social justice. In addition, I bring to the classroom a genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for learning that enables me to approach the students with the humility of a fellow learner and communicate real excitement about curriculum.
Social Epidemiology
Tufts University Department of Community Health (undergraduate)
In this course, we examine how social factors such as educational attainment, immigration status, neighborhood environments, workplaces, and relationships shape population health outcomes in the United States. Drawing on sociological theories and epidemiologic perspectives and methods, students in this course critically evaluate how research studies measure social factors and capture their effects on health.
Aging in America
Tufts University Department of Community Health (undergraduate)
This advanced seminar applies principals of community health to the experience of aging in America. Considering population perspectives, individuals’ lived experiences, and intergenerational reflections, we cover topics such as disability in old age, caregiving, and work/retirement. The main assignment involves integrating a scientific literature review with an interview of an older adult.
