Veterans From The Valley
John Joseph Patrick Ryan
John Joseph Patrick Ryan
John Joseph Patrick Ryan was a Canadian WW1 veteran who was born in Eganville and lived in Arnprior. He had a family of 5 with his wife Gertrude Ryan and his kids, Inez, Maxwell, and Gerald. John worked as a teamster, where he would drive teams of draft animals around Arnprior. They lived the same normal life as any other family would until June 19, 1916, 12:00 AM, when John enlisted with the military. He was 28 years old.
These images are from John's official documents showing the information that was required to go to war, like the name of your next of kin in case you died. It was a very long process that covered everything from your name, to the ages of your children. There is also a map of Arnprior, because he lived there.
John enlisted with the military on June 19, 1916. He enlisted in Arnprior, Ontario to join The Canadian Expeditionary Force or The CEF. His regimental number was 1042015 in the 240th Battalion. There is no published evidence of the battles he served in, or photographs of his time, but there is evidence he was in the forestry draft and was blinded by acid during his service. He was discharged on July 31, 1919.
This is a painting of British planes attacking a German Zeppelin factory in 1915.
