County staff has postponed a formal proposal to discontinue vacuum leaf service after the 2023-2024 season. After conducting an online survey in August 2023 for the public to solicit input on the staff proposal, results revealed that most residents who receive the service wish to keep it. As a result, the proposal, which was submitted to the Board of Supervisors in September 2023 has been postponed.

Fairfax County provides vacuum leaf collection from the curb three times each season to a portion of the residences located in Fairfax County. The solid waste collection areas are established through a petition process. Vacuum collection areas require an additional leaf petition process. For more information, see the links below as well as our frequently asked questions.

Vacuum leaf collection is managed by the Solid Waste Management Program. Our crews work with private contractors to provide adequate personnel and vehicles for leaf collection operations. You will see these contract crews in your neighborhood operating the vacuum leaf collection equipment.

The county's vacuum equipment performs three functions: vacuuming, leaf blowing and mulching. As leaves pass through the fan or impeller, they are ground into mulch. When items other than leaves (i.e., rocks, bottles, tree limbs) pass through, the fan or motor can be damaged.

Loose leaf collection is performed by the Cemeteries & Grounds Division during the months of October through January. Burlington is divided into four leaf pick-up zones that are each picked up once a month. To find your leaf collection zone and schedule, see map below.

Should you require more frequent leaf collection, you may place leaves in your yard waste container (no more than a 32 gallon container weighing less than 50lbs) and placed at the curb on your normal trash pick-up day. Leaves in plastic bags will not be picked up. Plastic bags are no longer acceptable and are banned at the disposal site per the NCDEQ.

Loose leaves should be piled behind the curb, or on the shoulder of streets without a curb and gutter, by 7am on the Monday of the scheduled week of collection. Please do not place leaves in the street, drainage ditches , or over water meters. Also, we ask that you not park in front of or on leaf piles.

Durango, CO: City of Durango and Table to Farm Compost are piloting a way to integrate leaf collections and composting into Fall Cleanup. The program is designed to explore more ways to divert leaves from the landfill while still preventing improper contamination of the composting processes. It will be offered in addition to the annual Pumpkin and Leaf Drop-Off event that takes place every year after Halloween.

Residents can pick up free certified and branded compostable leaf bags from the Recycle Center, located at 710 Tech Center Drive, during regular business hours beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 10. There is a 10-bag limit per person, and please only take what you need as there is a limited supply! Proof of City of Durango utility account is required. Please note the Recycle Center is closed Sundays and Mondays.

Residents can set out branded bags as part of their fall cleanup pick-up week, and these bags will be collected for composting. Residents may still set out other types of leaf bags, but any non-branded leaf bags will be part of landfill collections.

Curbside loose leaf collection is available twice a year during designated collection periods (Spring and Fall) to single family homes & townhouses only. Collection is made weekly on your recycling collection day, however there may be a one to two-day delay during busy periods. Place leaves at the street curb by 7 a.m. on your recycling day. Leaves placed in alleys or mews will not be collected.

The City of Spokane Street Maintenance Division removes fallen leaves from the streets to prevent hazardous conditions. Beech leaf disease has quickly spread from its initial detection point in Ohio. Currently, BLD has been found in 10 U.S. states and 1 Canadian Province. The first detection in Massachusetts was in June 2020 in the town of Plymouth (Plymouth County). Symptomatic trees have since been found in all Massachusetts Counties. As of July 2022, BLD had been confirmed in 83 communities in Massachusetts.

Beech leaf disease can be identified by the distinctive leaf symptoms it causes. Early BLD symptoms will include dark stripes between the veins on leaves. When looking up at the tree canopy from underneath, you might notice dark green bands on the underside of the leaves. As the disease progresses, leaves may become withered, curled, or develop a leathery texture. A heavily impacted tree may appear to have a thinner canopy or have sections of branch dieback.

Other insects and pathogens can also cause leaf damage on beech. However, this damage is usually easy to distinguish from BLD. Mites and aphids will feed on beech leaves and cause discoloration, but this is usually lighter in color than the leaf compared to BLD with has darker bands forming. Other insect or pathogen damage can cause leaves to look brownish and become more brittle, in comparison to BLD that will develop a more leathery texture as it withers and curls the leaves. Beech will also naturally hold onto leaves into the winter, if you see a beech with brown leaves still attached in the winter, this is normal.

If you think your beech tree might be infected with beech leaf disease, please use our online form, , to report it to the DCR Forest Health Program . Any details you are able to provide about the location, symptoms and severity of the disease, or any pictures of the tree will help us in our monitoring efforts of the progress of this disease in the Commonwealth. 2351a5e196
