Bio in a Nutshell
I work as Associate Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering of Lund University (Sweden) in the Engineering Geology division. I was previously hired as a postdoctoral researcher at the Hydrogeophysics group in Aarhus University. My research focuses on groundwater and hydrothermal systems: how we can better understand and monitor them by combining geophysical imaging, mineralogy and hydrogeochemical modelling.

Vision
Groundwater and hydrothermal systems are fascinating and we have a lot left to learn. They are also a reserve of water, heat and minerals that can help us meeting the planet's drinking, energy and food need. Can we utilize them and protect them at the same time?
I am particularly interested in three applied questions, where integrated monitoring techniques would help find a balance between resource utilization and protection:
1 Groundwater contamination
2 Geothermal exploration
3 Underground storage of greenhouse and toxic gases
My approach combines a range of geophysical imaging tools (e.g. surface and cross-borehole geo-electrical surveys, well logging), petrophysical laboratory analyses (e.g. impedance spectroscopy, porosity, permeability), mineralogical analyses (X-ray diffraction, cation exchange capacity, electron microscope) as well as hydrogeochemical modelling.
Although many fundamental and applied activities related to groundwater and hydrothermal systems are considered "green", I believe there is a need to reflect on the sustainability of these activities, both from an engineering and a societal perspective. Therefore, I have started introducing life-cycle assessment considerations into my work.

Research and Innovation
My research activities have always been closely connected to the industry.
I wrote my master thesis on the environmental impacts of uranium in-situ leaching in Mongolia, in collaboration with Orano (France).

I designed and led my PhD project on the exploration of high-temperature geothermal reservoirs with ISOR (Iceland).
PhD thesis (2019) → Outreach video series → .
I developed geophysical monitoring techniques for monitoring in-situ groundwater remediation with COWI (Denmark).

I am also exploring fundamental research questions:
Why are smectite minerals so electrically conductive? Lévy et al. (2018) →
Can smectite be responsible for both conduction and polarization? Lévy et al. (2019) →
One of my interests is to understand and solve the obstacles that pop up in the transition from laboratory studies, theory and numerical modelling to field observations.

Since 2019, I am managing the GEMGAS research project, funded by the Icelandic Technological Innovation Fund, on geophysical monitoring of H2S sequestration in basaltic rocks.

The three years of heavy fieldwork in Iceland led me to consider the sustainability of monitoring and research activities themselves.

Engagement with Environmental Matters
My personal engagement in environmental NGOs combined with my Engineering background help me reflect on the impact of my research and stir my activities in adequation with my values and competences.
I am involved in two science-based environmental NGOs: The Shifters and The Climate Fresk.
This involvement helps me be in touch with the most important environmental and societal questions.
Truly reconciling my competences and my research field with these questions is challenging, as I don't think "engineered" solutions can fix all our environmental problems. This reconciliation is my main ambition.
Other sources of inspiration to sharpen my awareness of environmental problems include:

Mineral resources: Aurore Stéphant on Thinkerview
