🌎Earthquakes in Ecuador
Ecuador is a country with intense seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the Nazca Plate subducts beneath the South American Plate. Below is a summary of the most significant earthquakes in the country's history:
🏛️ Major Historical Earthquakes
Riobamba Earthquake (1797):
Considered the most devastating earthquake in Ecuador’s history, with an estimated magnitude of 8.3. It caused the death of up to 40,000 people and was studied by the scientist Alexander von Humboldt.
Ambato Earthquake (1949):
Occurred on August 5, killing over 5,000 people. It destroyed large parts of Ambato and surrounding towns.
Pedernales Earthquake (2016):
On April 16, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the northern coast, heavily impacting Manabí and Esmeraldas provinces. It left 654 dead and thousands injured — one of the most destructive quakes in recent decades.
Southern Ecuador Earthquake (2023):
On March 18, a 6.5 magnitude quake hit El Oro and Azuay provinces, causing at least 14 deaths and more than 480 injuries.
Since 1900, Ecuador has recorded:
1 earthquake of magnitude 8.8
21 earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or higher
106 earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or higher
On average, Ecuador experiences around 414 earthquakes per year.
