The design of the information overlaps significantly with the experimental and environmental graphic design, specifically in the presentation of information in signage, visual displays, interpretive graphics and exhibitions. It is a central design competence and an essential tool for professionals in these disciplines. In particular, where complex information must be transmitted, it can increase understanding by creating a visual hierarchy that emphasizes more critical content. Linked in the Department of Architecture, Urbanism and Design of the Federal University of Ceará it is up to the LDI (Laboratory of information design) to propose a space of research, analysis and criticism reconciling and mediating efforts on such problems. In practice, this laboratory aims at the dedication of understanding, conversion of numerical or qualitative data into visual information, with a view to enabling the identification of patterns that are communicated through diagrams. The research includes the formation of a transdisciplinary study area with Design as an organizer, using related areas of knowledge, either as a tool (Computing, Statistics) or as an object (Design, Architecture, Urbanism and Engineering). The objective is, among other goals, to consolidate a research space in the Graduate Program in Architecture and Urbanism + Design of the Federal University of Ceará - PPG-AU+D where procedures, methodologies and publications in the area of Information Design are configured, as well as support research from other centers in data visualization.
