Lédger® Live Backup refers to the backup and recovery methods used with a compatible Ledger hardware wallet and its companion software. A proper backup is essential because cryptocurrency ownership depends on control of the private keys associated with your wallet. Ledger explains that the Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) acts as the backup for the private keys in a wallet and can be used to restore access when the original device is unavailable.
When setting up a Ledger device, the device generates a Secret Recovery Phrase. Ledger currently describes its hardware-wallet recovery phrase as a sequence of 24 words generated during device initialization. These words should be recorded carefully and kept offline in a secure location.
Your recovery phrase should never be treated like an ordinary password. Anyone who obtains it may be able to restore the associated wallet and control its assets. Avoid photographing your recovery phrase or storing it in cloud storage, password managers, email accounts, notes applications, or other internet-connected locations. A digital copy can create an additional attack surface.
Ledger also offers Ledger Recover, an optional subscription service designed to provide an encrypted backup of a Secret Recovery Phrase. Ledger says the service encrypts and splits the backup into three fragments that are securely stored with independent security providers. Recovery requires identity verification and a compatible Ledger device.
Ledger Recover is different from your traditional physical Recovery Sheet. It should be viewed as an additional recovery option rather than a reason to disregard basic backup security.
Ledger also provides a Ledger Recovery Key, described as a PIN-protected physical backup option that stores a backup of the Secret Recovery Phrase in a Secure Element. Ledger states that it complements the standard Recovery Sheet.
