Lédger® Live MetaMask commonly refers to using a Ledger hardware wallet together with MetaMask for interacting with decentralized applications and supported EVM networks. Ledger's companion application, formerly called Ledger Live, is now branded Ledger Wallet, while MetaMask provides its own browser extension and mobile wallet interface.
Connecting a Ledger device to MetaMask does not mean transferring your private keys into MetaMask. Instead, the Ledger hardware wallet remains responsible for signing transactions. MetaMask's official documentation explains that users need physical access to their connected hardware wallet when approving transactions or messages.
Ledger Wallet, formerly Ledger Live, is Ledger's official companion application for compatible Ledger hardware wallets. It allows users to manage supported accounts, review portfolio information, install applications on compatible devices, and access supported crypto services. Ledger provides desktop versions for Windows, macOS, and Linux, along with mobile versions for iOS and Android.
When MetaMask is used with a Ledger device, the two applications have different roles. MetaMask provides the Web3 interface for connecting to decentralized applications, while the Ledger device provides the hardware-based authorization required to approve supported transactions.
MetaMask's official instructions provide a straightforward connection process. First, unlock MetaMask and open the account menu. Select Add account or hardware wallet, choose Add hardware wallet, and then select Ledger. Follow the on-screen instructions and connect the Ledger device when requested.
MetaMask states that its Ledger integration supports EVM-based Ledger accounts. Once connected, the account can be used similarly to other MetaMask accounts, but transactions and messages requiring hardware-wallet authorization must be approved on the Ledger device.
Before connecting, make sure your Ledger device firmware and relevant cryptocurrency application are up to date. MetaMask also recommends using an updated browser and having the appropriate Ethereum application installed on the Ledger device.
MetaMask can provide access to decentralized applications that may not directly integrate with a Ledger device. Connecting the hardware wallet allows users to interact with compatible Web3 websites while retaining the additional physical authorization layer of the Ledger device.
A hardware wallet can add protection because simply accessing MetaMask on a computer does not provide enough authorization to move assets held by the connected hardware account. The physical Ledger device must be available for supported transaction approvals.
Never enter your Secret Recovery Phrase into MetaMask, Ledger Wallet, a website, a browser extension, or an online recovery form. Your recovery phrase should remain private and securely stored offline.
Always verify the website address before installing software or connecting your wallet. Avoid unofficial browser extensions, sponsored search results that lead to suspicious domains, and unsolicited messages claiming to offer wallet support.
Ledger specifically warns users never to disclose their 24-word recovery phrase.
