Before visiting Ledger.com/start, ensure you have the following prepared:
Your new Ledger hardware wallet (Nano X, Nano S Plus, Flex, or Stax)
A computer compatible with Ledger Live (Windows 10/11, macOS Monterey or later, or Ubuntu LTS 20.04/22.04)
The original USB cable that came with your device
A stable internet connection
A pen and the blank Recovery Sheet included in the device box
Open your browser and type ledger.com/start directly into the address bar—do not click links from emails, social media, or unknown websites
Select your Ledger device model from the options presented
Click the download button for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, or mobile)
Install Ledger Live on your device
Security Note: The only official download source is the Ledger website—never download from app stores or third-party sites
Launch Ledger Live and connect your Ledger device via USB (or Bluetooth for Nano X)
Select "Set up as a new device" for first-time setup, or "Restore from recovery phrase" if you are recovering an existing wallet
On the device screen, you will be prompted to choose a 4 to 8-digit PIN
Use the buttons to select digits and confirm each one
Enter the PIN again to confirm
Security Tips for Your PIN
Choose your own PIN—this code unlocks your physical device
Use 8 digits for optimal security
Never use a device supplied with a pre-set PIN—this indicates the device may be compromised. Ledger never provides a PIN with the product
This is the most critical step of the entire setup process. Your 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase is the master backup to your wallet and is displayed only once on the device's secure screen.
Take the blank Recovery Sheet supplied in the box
Write down word #1 on the Recovery Sheet and verify it is correct
Press the right button to move to the next word
Repeat until all 24 words are written down
The device will then ask you to confirm your recovery phrase by selecting the words you wrote down
⚠️ Critical Security Warning
Anyone with access to your Secret Recovery Phrase can take your assets—store it securely and offline
Never take a photo of it, store it in a cloud service, or enter it online
Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase—any request is a scam
If you have previously owned a Ledger device and need to restore access:
During setup, select "Restore from recovery phrase" instead of "Set up as new device"
Carefully enter your 24-word phrase in the correct order on the device screen
Your private keys will be regenerated, restoring access to your crypto accounts
As long as your recovery phrase is secure, you can recover your funds even if your device is lost or damaged.
