The Lancashire and Cheshire Numismatic Society (LCNS) is one of the oldest numismatic societies in the country, and has a rich history that spans more than 150 years. It was founded in 1864 (as the Manchester Numismatic Society) by a group of numismatic enthusiasts who shared a common interest in coins, medals, and other related objects. Dissolved in 1873 and revived in 1933 (as the Lancashire Numismatic Society), it changed its name to become the Lancashire and Cheshire Numismatic Society in 1967. It has been affiliated with the British Association of Numismatic Societies (BANS) since 1953.
Since its establishment, the Society has played a crucial role in encouraging the study of numismatics and developing a vibrant numismatic community in the region: it provides a platform for members to exchange knowledge, engage in research, and showcase their collections.
The Society aims to cover all branches of numismatics and all periods, extending from antiquity to the twenty-first century. It organises a varied annual programme of regular meetings (usually on a monthly basis), where members can gather to discuss various aspects of numismatics, and a presentations by guest speakers, who are experts in their respective fields. The topics covered range from historical coinage and medals to paper money, tokens, and other forms of currency. Visits to local museums, and other activities are also organised.
Throughout its history, the Society has nurtured a sense of community among numismatists, and contributed to the preservation and understanding of the numismatic heritage of Lancashire and Cheshire.
