End of Summer INFORMATION FROM LBAI
Volunteers: it is obvious the number of volunteers required to have successful events in the community. It takes a lot of work to set up and then clean up after events, to organize, plan and purchase materials required and most of this work is done by the LBAI executive. We really need more volunteers to step forward so that everything is not resting on the shoulders of the executive. Our beach clean up crew has gotten smaller and smaller each Saturday. Nicole Lester and her family have faithfully coordinated zebra mussel clean up for almost a decade now. This involves not only the Saturday clean up but also the maintenance and storage of equipment. People are greatly appreciative of the efforts but more people are needed so the same small group is not doing all the work for the benefit of everyone. Please see if you can give up at least one Saturday morning next season to help out.
Did you ever think about who cleans up the garbage left on the Sportsfield? It is usually Wayne Parker picking up bottles, cans and other garbage as well as the many bags of dog waste that are just left beside the garage. We do not have garbage or recycling collection at the Sportsfield, so please take your garbage home! ( and thanks Wayne).
Thank you to Gus and Verna Harder for donating the new nets for the soccer goals.
We still hope to put additional play equipment for young children at the Sportsfield but are having some difficulty with delivery. We hope to get additions in place before the winter.
Brush clean up: two more brush clean ups for LBAI members, Sept 8 and October 14. Maximum 10 bags and 5 piles of brush, tied and no more than 3 ft long.
If LBAI dues are paid your address is on the pick up list. Please email if you are missed.
Final event of the season: The Buster Band will be performing on Sunday, August 31 from 8:00-10:30
Insurance: several Cottagers have contacted us with regards to challenges getting cottage insurance with preferred rates. I have been working with the RM to provide information which can be used with insurance companies. Just in the last week, the Cottagers, after much discussion and forwarding of documentation from the East Beaches Fire Department Department and the municipality, have finally received their insurance at preferred rates( within 12 km of the fire hall). Of note: the postal code for Lester Beach is R0E 0T0. The mailing address for Lester Beach is at Thompson Crossing Store in Belair with a postal code of R0E 0E0. There is a difference between the residential code and the actual mailing address which is out of our community and beyond the 12 Km distance. So if you are having difficulties with your insurance company, note our actual postal code.
Pickleball court: our community survey indicated that approximately 75% of members would like to see a pickleball court at the Sportsfield. We recognize the benefits to having a multi- purpose court in the community. The executive, with the help of Gayle Eaton ( funding) and Rene Mailhot ( project management) have done all the groundwork to begin the development of the court. We now need someone who is willing to take on this project to manage and coordinate it. We must apply for a permit from the municipality and once approved to develop a financial plan and coordinate with contractors and work with the executive. This is a considerable commitment but it is beyond the ability of the executive to continue the develop the court without someone spearheading the project. Please contact me if you are interested in taking on this role.
Forest management: I will continue to follow up with Manitoba Hydro to ensure that trees are removed near hydro lines as they stated they would do earlier in the season. Although our dry spell seems to have ended, I will also follow up with the municipality so that the Wildfire management Committee is not forgotten and that an actual proactive plan is put in place for the future.
