In Memory

Mr. Henry & Mr. Hoover

We owe a debt of gratitude to two highly influential and impactful individuals. Mr. S. Thomas Henry started the steel drum band at Tuley high school in the 1960s. Mr. Lloyd Hoover joined him later. As teachers at Tuley High School, they welcomed the shifting student population by incorporating culturally relevant content. This was uncommon in the 1960s, but they brought the steel drum and Caribbean music to the new high school building down the street named Roberto Clemente High School.

With their dedication and work, many students like us had a wonderful experience working as a team. We performed all over the Chicagoland area at events we would have likely never been able to attend.

Thank you, Mr. Henry and Mr. Hoover, for your hard work, dedication, and inclusivity. You were ahead of the times and pioneers of inclusion, acceptance, and believing in us when others did not. We are forever grateful!
