The lists below are specific to Lawrence School and the books are available at our public libraries in Brookline and Boston.

If you prefer to own a copy, they are also available at our local bookstores.

Lawrence School Required Reading:

Into 2: Students entering 2nd grade are encouraged to read a wide variety of authors and genres over the summer and complete one of the two forms distributed at the end of first grade (forms are also attached here). Please bring one completed form to your 2nd grade teacher in September.

Into 3: Students entering 3rd grade are not assigned one required title. They are expected to read widely across a variety of genres for at least 30 minutes each day. We encourage entering 3rd graders to consider the recommended titles from the Brookline Summer Reading list as well as suggestions from local libraries or bookstores.


Into 4: Students entering 4th grade are not assigned one required title. They are expected to read widely across a variety of genres for at least 30 minutes each day. We encourage entering 4th graders to consider the recommended titles from the Brookline Summer Reading list as well as suggestions from local libraries or bookstores.


Into 5: Save Me a Seat by Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan


Into 6: The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis and I am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education by Malala Yousafzai and Patricia McCormick and one additional title from the district’s summer reading list.


Into 7: Bomb by Steve Sheinkin and Grenade by Alan Gratz and one more book of your choice from the district’s summer reading list.


Into 8: Fire in the Streets by Kekla Magoon and Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom: My Story of the Selma Voting Rights March by Lynda Blackmon Lowery and one additional book of your choosing from the district’s summer reading list.

Optional: One or more of the following books:
