Policing, Legitimacy and Governance in East Asia
My research examines how policing is governed, legitimated and learned in East Asia. Working comparatively across Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, I develop two linked frameworks: conditional legitimacy, which explains how public consent to policing is granted and withdrawn as political conditions change, and tacit policing knowledge, which traces how officers acquire the unwritten judgement that shapes everyday practice. Current projects, including an NSTC-funded study (2026–2028), extend this work to private and commodified policing, algorithmic profiling in immigration enforcement, and the policing of mobile and migrant populations, connecting Taiwan's experience to international debates. A second strand, in the sociology of sport, studies grassroots football, coaching as precarious work, and women's football in Hong Kong and Australia.
