So, What is the law of inverse in physics? An inverse means an opposite; a balancing direction of any object should be always opposite to the direction of falling force or gravity. Due to the law of inverse is very novel idea in physics, it would be easier build a right concept first before exploring the law. The best approach to get the concept is by learning how our human balancing on a single foot as shown in several following figures. In Fig 1a, the center of gravity(CG) is right above supporting point (the foot) or the balancing direction is opposite to the direction of gravity. Because the supporting point bears all the weight of the person, there is no weight force left to make the person to fall. However in Fig. 1b, situation is no longer good for balancing. The center of gravity is not right above the supporting point meaning the balance direction is tilting. The pink dash line between the supporting point and the center of gravity define the direction of balancing (the pink arrow). The pink dash line is tilting away from the blue vertical dash line meaning the direction of balance is no longer opposite to direction of gravity (vertical downward). In this tilting situation, the supporting point is only bearing a portion of the weight rather than total body weight; the more tilting in balancing direction; the less portion of the weight would be distributed to the supporting point(foot); the sooner the person would lose the balance because more weight force left to cause the falling. Therefore, the ideal balance situation is making supporting point takes care all the body weight so that there is no weight force left to cause the falling. The only time for supporting point to hold 100% of the person’s weight is when the balancing direction 100% opposite to the direction of gravity (Fig. 1a). For the reader who are able to understand the advantage of balancing at the opposite direction of gravity, they would be ready to appreciate the law of inverse.
Human or all other vertebrates have been involved a complicated Balance System for staying up. The balance system includes position (or gravity) sensor, skeleton, muscle, and brain for making decision in balancing.
The basic strategy for balancing on single foot is changing the body posture to shift center of gravity to where it's right above foot or supporting point. Another way of saying is changing the balance direction from tilting into upright position, which means the opposite direction to the gravity. Fig. 2a is a person at a tilt direction, there is a short period of time for the person to change body posture for shifting the center of weight to where is right above the supporting point to avoid falling in Fig. 2b. If the person unable to shift fast enough, falling would occur.
Balancing system have been limited to living animal only; until recently for the last few decades, the balance robots have been successfully developed with help of the advanced digital technology. Similar to balance system in vertebrates, balancing robot has to have a several different functional components to do the job, such as gravity sensor, digital modular, mechanical units for moving, and power source(electricity). Digital Modular works like cerebellum in biological brain for making decisions in how to move for balancing. The Fig.4 below illustrates how robot avoid falling by using digital balance system moving wheels at right direction and right timing. The technical term for this kind of balancing is inverted pendulum.
The Fig. 4a & 4e are two identical robots A & robot B balancing at upright direction. When there is wind blowing the robots from the back of the robot forwardly, the two robots would tilting forward as shown in Fig. 4b & 4f. The robots A In Fig. 4c did not move the wheels forward or not move forward fast enough, the robot A would become more and more tilting until completely falling as in Fig. 4d. In Fig. 4g, the robot B start to respond the tilting by moving the wheels forward fast enough to shift the center of gravity back to where is right above the supporting point (the wheels). In another words, the robot B is able to correct the tilting direction balancing back to upright direction by moving the wheels forward at right time in Fig. 4h.
The principle of balancing for human and robot are the same: maintain balancing direct opposite to the direction of gravity. The technical term for the balancing is Inverted Pendulum Balancing. The law of inverse use the same concept also; but, the only difference is that the law of inverse does not need any balance system for doing balancing work. Human and robot would fall if their balance systems stop working or not act fast enough. A balance system is group of several different natural laws ( electronic law, magnetic law, mechanical law, sensor law, and more) working together to perform a single task: balancing.
