Why?
We wanted our students to learn more about Laval Nugent, an Irishman who was politically and culturally active in Croatia in the first half of the 19th century.
Who was Laval Nugent?
Count Laval Nugent is one of the most dynamic figures not only in Croatian but also in European history of the first half of the 19th century and when one studies his biography it is difficult to understand why relatively little is known about him. An Irishman by birth, a field marshal of the Habsburg army, a negotiator during the Napoleonic Wars, a favorite of Pope Pius VII, a member of the Illyrian movement and an undoubtedly passionate art collector, he managed to hide from the general public for years.
