DÉMARCHE ARTISTIQUE
Peuplé d'entités biomorphiques déviantes, d'artefacts techno-douteux et de systèmes dysfonctionnels, mon univers sculptural évoque le laboratoire d'un scientifi que delulu ou la salle de jeu d’un adolescent imaginatif. Pour affronter notre époque trouble, je construis des mondes maximalistes et absurdes, des assemblages alambiqués découlant d’une fascination envers la science-fiction, les jeux vidéo, les mèmes, la biologie et les rabbit holes conspirationnistes.

Ancré dans mes racines punk et do-it-yourself, l'expérimentation ludique est centrale à mon processus. Alternant entre outils numériques et manuels, je retravaille mes pièces à répétition, laissant les couches d'interventions s'accumuler comme témoignages de leurs multiples transformations. Je travaille en série, regroupant plusieurs oeuvres au sein d’installations élaborées, parsemées de mécanismes instables, de bébelles suspendues et d'indices cachés.

Je m'intéresse à l'impression 3D et l'IA comme outils permettant de repousser les limites de la sculpture, aux langages émergents de la collaboration humain-machine et aux logiques de viralité, de performance et de désinformation des médias sociaux. Le travail incarné en atelier est une catharsis en soi, un geste viscéral et thérapeutique face à l'angoisse et la surstimulation.

Mon travail s’épanouit dans ses contrastes : séduisant et dégoûtant, brillant et inquiétant, bricolé et généré. Il offre un moment de découverte, d'émerveillement ou de rire. L'art demeure un espace précieux pour désobéir, guérir ou simplement avoir du fun. Mon propre amusement reste d'ailleurs le meilleur guide : si je glousse en travaillant, je sais que je suis sur la bonne voie!

BIOGRAPHIE
Reconnu comme drummer de death métal, sous son alter ego Oui Chichi ou pour son obsession pour les hippocampes, Laurent Viau-Lapointe oeuvre en sculpture, en arts numériques, en musique et en performance. Diplômé en Intermedia & Cyberarts (Université Concordia) et en Gestion culturelle (HEC Montréal), il poursuit actuellement une maîtrise en arts visuels et médiatiques à l’UQAM. Son travail a été présenté à Montréal (Maison culturelle Montréal-Nord et Rivière-des-Prairies, Espace Loulou, Eastern Bloc), ainsi qu’à l’étranger (Finlande, Roumanie). Il est récipiendaire de la bourse REDA 2026, d'une mention au prix Louise Paillé 2025 et gagnant à l’émission Un Souper presque parfait. Côté musical, Laurent cumule une centaine de spectacles et douze albums avec divers projets. Membre du collectif d’artistes/makers punkLab et anciennement du controversé art club Les Enfants de Chienne, il s’implique également auprès d’organismes culturels (Galerie Galerie, Verticale, Ateliers Belleville), ainsi qu'en fabrication numérique (Fab Labs) et en IA.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Inhabited by deviant biomorphic entities, techno-dubious artefacts and dysfunctional systems, my sculptural universe evokes the lab of a delulu scientist or the playroom of an imaginative teenager. To cope with our troubled times, I build maximalist, absurd worlds, convoluted assemblages drawn from a fascination with sci-fi , video games, memes, biology and conspiratorial rabbit holes.

Rooted in my punk and do-it-yourself background, playful experimentation sits at the core of my process. Alternating between digital and manual tools, I work on my pieces repeatedly, letting layers upon layers of intervention accumulate as a testament to their multiple transformations. I work in series, bringing several works together into elaborate installations, scattered with unstable mechanisms, hanging trinkets and hidden clues.

I am interested in 3D printing and AI as tools to push sculpture further, in the emerging languages of human-machine collaboration, and in social media’s logics of virality, performance and misinformation. Embodied studio work is a catharsis in itself, a visceral, therapeutic gesture in the face of anguish and overstimulation.

My work thrives in its contrasts : seductive yet abject, shiny yet unsettling, tinkered yet generated. It offers a moment of discovery, wonder or laughter. Art remains a precious space to disobey, heal or simply have fun. My own amusement remains the best guide: if I giggle while working, I know I'm on the right track!

BIOGRAPHY
Known as a death metal drummer, under his alter ego Oui Chichi, or for his obsession with seahorses, Laurent Viau-Lapointe works in sculpture, digital arts, music, and performance. A graduate in Intermedia & Cyberarts (Concordia University) and Cultural Management (HEC Montréal), he is currently pursuing a Master’s in Visual and Media Arts at UQAM. His work has been shown in Montreal (Maison culturelle Montréal-Nord and Rivière-des-Prairies, Espace Loulou, Eastern Bloc), as well as abroad (Finland, Romania). He is a recipient of the 2026 REDA grant, an honorable mention for the 2025 Louise Paillé prize, and a winner on the show Un Souper presque parfait. In music, Laurent has performed over a hundred shows and released twelve albums across various projects. A member of the artist/maker collective punkLab and formerly of the controversial art club Les Enfants de Chienne, he is also involved with cultural organizations (Galerie Galerie, Verticale, Ateliers Belleville), digital fabrication (Fab Labs), and AI.
