In the fall of 2021, I gave a webinar on the evolutionary history and conservation of wolves in South and Central Asia. Here, I talk about our recent findings on sequencing the first whole genomes of Indian wolves, where we found they represent the world's most ancient surviving wolf lineage. It has now reached over 6,000 views!
I had a fun conservation all about Indian wolves with The Grasslands Trust in India, which is a NGO working towards conserving wildlife found in grasslands and scrublands of India. They do great work to protect these endangered grassland habitats through research activities and awareness.
In the winter of 2022 I gave a webinar over Zoom about our gray wolf research at the University of Okara in Pakistan. This webinar was organized by Dr. Hira Fatima who had previously spent 6 months in our lab at UC Davis. It was a lot of fun to share our research and answer questions from students!
Teaching and mentoring students is a role I take seriously and one of the most rewarding parts of being a scientist. My goal is to create a supportive learning enviornment where students (1) learn through engaging lessons, (2) develop skills they use in everyday life, such as critical thinking, (3) and feel confident and curious when approaching science. I am always happy to discuss research and career opportunities in and outside of academia to students.
Selected Teaching experience
Instructor - ConGen Global - Recent Advances in Conservation Genomics Course at the Cheetah COnservaton Fund Research Center, Otjiwaronogo, Namibia. Scheduled Jan 2025
This 10 day course is for 25-30 graduate students working professionals, with an emphasis on students from African countries. The course features the latest methods, hands-on applications of genetic/genomic analyses for conservation of endangered species, and faculty to share expertise.
Instructor - Bioinformatics Analysis for Conservation Genomics Course at the Smithsonian's Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal. October 2024.
This is a 10-day residential course for graduate students and professionals where they will learn scientific concepts and hands-on computational analyses to analyze genomic data. After the course, students and instructors will continue to collaborate with each other to prepare a manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal.
Instructor - NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Writing Seminar at UC Davis, held in Fall 2020.
In this 6 week course, I mentored students on grant and scientific writing for NSF GRFP proposals. We met 3 hours every week to discuss writing strategies, provide feedback, and improve writing skills.
Teaching Assistant - Introduction to Ecology (EVE101) at UC Davis, Spring 2021, 2022
In the 2021 course, I wrote a final oral exam and evaluating student's conceptual understanding of the course topics over Zoom, similar to a Qualifying Exam. For the 2022 course, I led discussion sections where I facilitated scientific paper discussions and personally designed active learning lessons to reinforce the theoretical concepts of the course.
Teaching Assistant - Introduction to Biology (BIS2B and BIS2C) at UC Davis, 2017, 2021, 2022
I taught the laboratory sections and office hours for students. This is a fun class where students perform hand-on exercises to learn various concepts on Ecology and Evolution.
