IV. Do
I was able to implement some but not all of my action plan. I was able to complete a needs assessment and survey my colleagues (stakeholders) and acknowledge this as a need in our school. I also completed the PowerPoint and got materials ready for the Professional Development day for the Special Education staff in my building. I presented the research and information on student-led IEP meetings on August 21, 2019 (Artifact Sign In Sheet). Once school starts I will start implementing the student-led IEP meetings along with my colleagues. My project will continue all school year long as we will be assessing and reflecting on our meetings monthly to improve our process.
My plan of action was very successful. Completing the needs assessment gave me some great information of what my colleagues already know about the topic of student-led IEP meetings and how much of a need they also see that this implementation is to our school. I felt prepared and excited to present the material to my stakeholders and they seemed just as excited to learn. They are motivated to get started with the implementation of student-led IEP meetings and know the benefits. Other stakeholders impacted will be our students and parents as well as general education teachers- we will not see this impact until the implementation is underway, however. Impacted practice will include how we run our IEP meetings and how we utilize our case management periods each day.
Adult Learning competency was used in the implementation of my project by leading professional learning activities to enhance the practice of others (my colleagues). I implemented adult-learning strategies into my presentation while utilizing colleagues diverse areas of expertise when presenting to the group. I have not presented yet, but planned on strategies to use while giving the information to my colleagues (Artifact Brainstorm) . Technological Facility competency was used in the implementation of my project by using technology to collaborate and facilitate a shared vision and a meaningful purpose and by modeling the use of current technology to further student learning. I used PowerPoint and a SmartBoard to present the information to my colleagues. I also used Google Docs to send a needs assessment survey to the group. I used Coaching and Mentoring competency in the implementation by engaging in formal roles of coaching and mentoring. I provided formal coaching when I taught the PowerPoint and I will continue to coach and mentor this year as we proceed in the process. We will also be collecting evidence and providing meaningful feedback to each other as we work to facilitate student-led IEP meetings in our own caseloads. Collaborate Purposefully was used in the implementation by creating and supporting opportunities for stakeholders of all cultures (and abilities) to contribute their knowledge, skills, and perspectives in a variety of ways. At the professional development opportunity I am offering, we will be working together to think pair, share current practice and the good/bad in what we are currently doing. (Artifact Work from Presentation)
Obstacles I encountered during the project was time. I would have liked to complete the Professional Development presentation before the end of the summer but my colleagues all agreed on this date and I did not have much "say" in changing it. Because of this, I haven't been able to complete the project. I foresee having some of my colleagues voice concerns about time and resources for implementation but I think I have a pretty good debate for why these need to be implemented in our school and why time or resources are not as big of a concern as they might think. I foresee they might also just be weary of starting something new, knowing they probably feel content in the status quo.
Because I have not yet completed the presentation to my colleagues, I am not sure of changes I would make to my implementation process. I do know, however, changes I would make next time would be to move up the presentation date so that I could fully reflect on the presentation and not hold it so close to school starting.
