When I worked in PR & Marketing at Gadsden State, I oversaw the College's websites and social media accounts. During my time in the department, social grew in both audience and engagement. (YouTube rose the most at 800% more followers.)
As a friend at another community college puts it, the website is the door for a student to enter, but social media is the window that lets them see inside the institution first!
