The French Laundry, a 1,600 square-foot structure constructed of river rock and timbers, was built as a saloon in 1900 by a Scottish stonemason. The building later served as a residence, and during the 1920s operated as a French steam laundry. In 1978, town mayor Don Schmitt and his wife Sally renovated the structure into a restaurant, which Keller then purchased in 1994.

CWRU provides washing machines and dryers in each residence hall. The cost of laundry is included in your room rate, so it is easy to do laundry day or night. Residents can take advantage of the 20 lb. capacity washers with front loading instead of the less efficient top-loading system. These machines save 14 or more gallons of water per load, reducing the quantity of detergent required to wash clothes. The dryers feature large capacity drums for hefty loads of laundry and lint filters for easy cleaning.

All washing machines are high efficiency so please be sure to use high efficiency (HE) detergents. Washing machines should only be filled 2/3 to 3/4 full so please space out you laundry accordingly to avoid un-balancing and damaging the machines.

Laundry, a regular and mundane chore, has a significant environmental impact. With the technological advances of modern appliances and the introduction of environmentally friendly scent-free products over the past decade, it is easier than ever to "green" your laundry practices. Here are some facts about laundry:

When you consider that the average American family washes about 300 loads of laundry per year, the environmental impacts from water use, energy use and hazardous chemicals really add up. In addition, the financial costs of energy and water from doing laundry also add up. Appliance and equipment efficiency standards established by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in recent decades have led to dramatic gains in energy efficiency and saved consumers energy and money.

The commercial laundry sector in particular has the potential to "yield significant savings" by transitioning to ENERGY STAR commercial washers since market penetration of ENERGY STAR washers is estimated at only 32%. A 2013 report by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy and the Natural Resources Defense Council Water suggests that upgrades of commercial washing machines can result in savings of 9.3 to 29.6 gallons of water and reductions in dryer use can save 25,000 to 38,000 BTUs per wash cycle.

Commercial laundry products-typically made from a combination of chemicals that may include surfactants, bleaching agents, and enzymes-are intended to remove dirt from textiles and fragrance to add a "clean" scent. Dryer sheets are infused with strong fragrances. While some chemicals common in laundry products are known skin irritants, the extent of the environmental and health impacts from laundry detergent and dryer sheets is not fully understood. Complicating matters further, manufacturers are not required to disclose their ingredients. A 2011 study found that scented laundry products emit VOCs including the carcinogens acetaldehyde and benzene. Unscented environmentally friendly laundry products are safer alternatives to traditional laundry products.

The U.S. Naval Academy Laundry and Dry Cleaning Facility provides a full-service program to the Brigade of Midshipmen and Academy Service Organizations, which includes pick-up, processing, and delivery of all laundry and dry cleaning items.

Routine laundry procedures, detergents, and laundry additives will all help to make clothes, towels, and linens safe to wear or touch. If items have been contaminated by infectious material (like blood or puss), they can be laundered separately, but it is not absolutely necessary.

In general, wash and dry in the warmest temperatures recommended on the clothing label. Hot water washing is not necessary to remove MRSA from laundry. Read and follow the clothing and soap or detergent label instructions. Water temperatures for household laundry depend on the type of fiber or fabric of the clothing. Also, some laundry detergents are made to clean best at certain temperatures. Not following instructions could damage the clothing item or decrease the effectiveness of the detergent.

It is not necessary to use bleach for each load of laundry. Detergent alone will make laundry clean and safe for wear and use. Use of bleach as a disinfectant in laundering is optional, and not all fabrics are suitable for bleach. Read the clothing label instructions.

EC30 laundry detergent is designed to be compatible with machine washers; however, clothes should get clean and fresh even when hand washing. We do not recommend cutting the laundry swatch. First dissolve the swatch in the water, stirring well to make sure it is fully dissolved before adding clothes. Leave the clothes to soak for some time to allow the cleaning agents to do their work. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.

Chestnuts can be pulverized using the methods above, dried (either in oven on trays over a low temp or in sun) and stored in jars for future use. When ready to make a new batch, take 1/2 cup of dried horse chestnut pulp, soak in 1 cup of boiling water, steep, strain, and use for your next load of laundry.

Update: I was successfully able to reconstitute the dried chestnut pulp to make liquid chestnut soap. Same process as above. Take 1/2 cup of dried pulp, add 1 cup boiling water, wait 30 minutes, and strain. Should make enough soap for 3 loads of laundry if you use 1/4 to 1/3 cup for each wash.

Laundry rooms are located in each residence hall. Every laundry room is equipped with multiple High Efficiency (HE) washers and dryers. Machines accept coins or Lancer CA$H. The cost per wash or dry cycle is $1.75 per load.

The Energy Star rated, high-efficiency machines installed on campus clean effectively, help save time, and are gentle on your clothes and the environment! High-efficiency, front loading machines hold more clothes and use less water than conventional laundry equipment, saving you time and energy. For best results, use only 2 tbsp. of concentrated HE detergent; it's specially formulated for high-efficiency machines. If using a pod, place directly in the drum of the washer (not the detergent dispenser).

Many people tend to do their laundry at similar times, which often result in long wait times for available washers and dryers. In response to this dilemma and requests for greater control over laundry activities, CAU has installed an internet application called LaundryView.
