Happy Spring to everyone!!!
I encourage each of you to broadcast a note or such with your status and any interesting, secret race-winning strategies you don’t want us to know about. We are all looking forward to getting on the water no doubt.

Support the MC Scow Association
It's time to sign up for MCSA if you haven't done so yet. You can sign up on the https://www.mcscow.org/ class website. The site is also a good resource for information about MC Scow sailing, used boats, tuning guide, and links to other related sites. Thanks to those who support it each year.
New Members
Most of our new members come from contact with our current members. We want that to continue. If you know anyone that might be interested in joining in a sailing or non-sailing capacity invite them to the Kickoff and introduce them to members who can help encourage the process.
Social Events
The Mid-Summer Picnic is planned for July 14 (TBC).
The Fall Awards Picnic will be September 8 (TBC).
Locations TBC – See “LLSC Events Planning framework” below. We will work with the Social Committee to coordinate the details.
Trophies
Our Sailing Club (LLSC) provides many opportunities to win some gold.
- The Summer Series includes all races except the Harry S. Truman. The top 4 places in the Summer Series are presented with a trophy to keep.
- The Yacht Club Regatta Series. The LLSC is part of the LLYC and they sponsor a three race series each season. The winners of the series, 1st through 4th place winners are presented trophies provided by the Yacht Club.
- Trophy and Cup races listed in the schedule are single race trophies presented to the winners of each of these races. These are traveling trophies; the winners hold them for one year.
Trophies themselves will be engraved, repaired, and when necessary, replaced for a hardware upgrade between sailing seasons.
Race Committee
Each Sailor to sign up for a weekend. The exceptions are the three LLYC regatta races that should have a non sailor RC to permit all sailors to sail in the series.
Each Weekend:
- Peter and Ben will set the course marks and RC boat mooring buoy Sunday before 9:00am (8:00 if 9:00 race start). We will endeavor to send out a notice confirming the course status.
- RC sailor of the day and helper to pick up the RC Kit (Auto-Hoot horn, tally sheet, megaphone, stop watches, wind gage, etc.) from Johnson/Ingle on Saturday or early Sunday Morning. Ask questions early if you have questions so we are not pressed for time before a race.
- RC to be out on the course and tied off to the Mooring buoy by 9:15. See race diagram for Start line (and finish line) configurations. If you are not sure ask one of the team around you for a second opinion.
- The Auto-Hoot horn instructions will give you the details of starting. Generally, they are: 5 min horn, 4 min horn, 1 min horn, start. For the handicap system, a horn 2 min later and 5 min later. - After the race, pick up buoys and return to Johnson/Ingle when you return the RC Kit and results sheet. - Take phone photo of results sheet and email to Peter, Ben. Return Results sheet hard copy. We will review the above process with the Race Committee Chairs and confirm any modifications as the summer proceeds.
Rules
Please refresh your recall of the rules with the links on our website:
http://www.lauderdalesailingclub.com/rulesdiscussion.html
We will have a brief discussion at the Kickoff.
Race Schedule
Races are in Green Lake unless noted. We have two regular races plus the Harry S Truman race that are not in Green Lake. This gives residents of Mill and Middle lakes an opportunity to watch some racing which they enjoy and it provides our sport some added visibility.
Default race start is 10:00 AM. However, as in the past, pay attention for notices starting a race early for weather or doubling races on a day for make-up.
If you expect to do well, come early enough to sail the course at least once, if you want to do twice as well, sail it twice.
Starting & Handicap System
The following is the pre-programed sequence within our Auto-Hoot starting horn:
(First Race of the Season)
- The first horn will be a 5 minute warning
- The second horn is the 4 minute warning
- The third horn is the 1 minute warning
- The fourth horn is the START horn
(All subsequent Races)
- After the Start Horn, there will be another horn 2 minutes later. This for the sailors who have finished in the top three places of a previous race. These sailors will start 2 minutes after the Start horn for the balance of the season unless they then finish 1st place in a race.
- When this happens, they then start at a horn that goes off 5 minutes after the Start horn. - Sailors are expected to track their own scoring and check the website scoresheet for inconsistencies. Multi-race days must be tracked closely if you do well and your position changes in the first race of the day, your new position will apply to the second race. For greater sportsmanship, if you notice a sailor at fault or recognize the potential for confusion please alert/remind the sailor so we can all sail with confidence!
We will not be using Flags so keep your ears open and use a watch for your own start coordination. If you go over the line early, the race committee will notify you and you will have to restart.
Chase Boats
We appreciate everyone’s solid commitment to our safety. Bill Crist’s prompt and agile wave runner is a critical contribution as well as all the spectator (sometimes rescue) boats that help us create a larger presence on the water. This is all Invaluable as the lake gets more and more congested and we face changing conditions with wake and other power boats sharing the water with us. Everyone - please spread the word promoting awareness among all boaters and encouraging spectators to attend on race days. As always, please exercise all boating safety caution. As the congestion increases so does the lack of general boating experience and accidents can happen as we have seen. Don’t count on other’s knowing the rules…
Web Page
John Hamilton continues to master his job with the LLSC web site. Help him by sending in photos and news items for posting on the site. Thanks John!
I am looking forward to a great year for all of us with high participation and great wind. Sincerely,
Ben Johnson, Commodore

LLSC Event Planning Framework:
3 LLSC events include a Kick-off event around Memorial Day – a catered brunch held at the LL Community Center. Then a Mid-Summer Picnic and an end of season Awards Picnic, each at a sailor’s lake property.
HOST GROUP - Noting that only 6 sailor homes present adequate parking, flat ground, plenty of space, restroom access, etc. and the burden of hosting often expands to “all” the details, we would propose that these six locations would not be held responsible for anything but hosting. In other words, they provide the venue only and all other event duties would fall on others per below.
PLANNING GROUP – responsible for putting out the notification for the event, confirming group assignments are made and understood, and receiving all the feedback on who is coming and who is not. This group will also be responsible for set-up including getting the tables out of the Community Center and delivering to the Host location and getting them back to the community center. They will also help with Cleanup afterwards.
FOOD GROUP - responsible for ordering and delivering the main dish, providing all the necessary eating supplies including, tableware and napkins, and help with Cleanup afterwards.
Group: each non-host sailor will volunteer participation in the Food or Planning group. Each group will be responsible each season to designate who in their group will be doing the Mid-summer and who will do the Awards party. If the group wants to name more than one sailor to each event or 2-3 sailors, that would be up to the group. We would expect the Group to have a leader who will communicate with the Club’s Officers and within the group to see that the Group’s duties are fulfilled. That leadership can be rotated as well.
The Officers of the Club are not expected to be in a group unless of course they are a Host Group member. However, the Officers will be responsible for planning something Brand New: The Mid-Summer Party Feature. This feature could be a Guest Speaker, a New Sailboat, (an MC or any other boat that would be interesting to the group: M15 is new and very popular right now. The M17 is a real racehorse. It could be an E Scow or C
Scow or some other type of sailboat – Foiling?) It could be sailing gear or cleaning and polishing products that someone uses and would like to do a demonstration. It could be almost anything to attract sailors and their families to the event.
One other major consideration is to have the mid-summer picnic on Saturday instead of after the race on Sunday. Too many of us spend the time after the race on Sunday, napping and or other types of relaxation. If we have it on a Saturday, we’ll give ourselves more time.
And the last major change is for the Awards party at the end of the season following the Harry S Truman race. This does not include a meal. We are suggesting that we consider that the Food Group arrange finger food, both appetizer type and desert type, all provided by the Club. Participants need only bring their drinks and chairs.
As the summer progresses, we will work with the Social Committee Chairs to coordinate the above details. PROPOSED (notify Social Committee Chairs for adjustments):
