Accessibility in Higher Education
As I delve deeper into my research on accessibility in higher education, I've identified several categories of accessibility that require attention. My current focus is on faculty and staff development concerning the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). I've noticed a significant gap in knowledge among faculty and staff regarding ADA law. Consequently, I'm dedicating my efforts to designing a tailored training program for faculty, catering to the specific needs of individual programs within my current university.
Throughout my literature review, I've come across common issues that need to be addressed:
Insufficient Information on Engaging Students with Disabilities: Faculty and staff lack adequate knowledge on how to effectively engage students with disabilities. Therefore, providing them with proper training is crucial.
Uncertainty on Handling Accommodations: Most faculty members are unsure about the appropriate steps to take once they receive students' accommodations letters. They need guidance and support.
One-Size-Fits-All Approach in Training: The existing training and resources offered to faculty are generic and don't account for the diverse structures of different programs. A more personalized approach is necessary for better results.
To address these issues, I believe we must create customized training and resources for each individual program. This tailored approach will ensure effectiveness and promote disability awareness throughout higher education.
