AAAI 2021 Workshop

Bem-vindos y bienvenidas! LatinXperiences is an event that strives to create new and lasting connections between established researchers, at top-tier universities and research laboratories, and early-career researchers and students from Latin American countries.
There are thriving research and tech communities in Latin America that, for the most part, do not interact with the AAAI community. Our goal is to bring these communities together in a welcoming, social environment.
The event will be held virtually on February 4th from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm PT. You can find the time in a city near you here.

12:00 - 13:00 PT - Panel discussion
We will have an in depth discussion on the representation of Latin American researchers in academia and technology.
13:00 - 14:00 PT - Breakout sessions: Spark new connections and have fun!
Via an online platform, randomly pair with other participants for a fixed-time chat to to create new connections, even potential future collaborators!

Pablo Samuel was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador, and moved to Montreal after high school to study at McGill. He stayed in Montreal for the next 10 years, finished his bachelors, worked at a flight simulator company, and then eventually obtained his masters and PhD at McGill, focusing on Reinforcement Learning. After his PhD Pablo did a 10-month postdoc in Paris before moving to Pittsburgh to join Google. He has worked at Google for almost 9 years, and is currently a research Software Developer in Google Brain in Montreal, focusing on fundamental Reinforcement Learning research, as well as Machine Learning and Creativity. Aside from his interest in coding/AI/math, Pablo is an active musician (https://www.psctrio.com/), loves running (6 marathons so far, including Boston!), and discussing politics and activism.
Pablo Samuel nació y creció en Quito, Ecuador, y se mudó a Montreal después de la secundaria para estudiar en McGill. Se quedó en Montreal por los siguientes 10 años, acabó su bachiller, trabajó en una compañía de simulación de vuelo, y eventualmente obtuvo su maestría y doctorado en McGill, enfocándose en aprendizaje por refuerzo. Después de su PhD, Pablo hizo un postdoctorado de 10 meses en París antes de mudarse a Pittsburgh para unirse a Google. Ha trabajado en Google por casi 9 años y actualmente es Staff Research Software Developer en Google Brain en Montreal, enfocándose en la investigación para el aprendizaje por refuerzo, al igual que la intersección entre creatividad y la inteligencia artificial. Es active en promover e incrementar la representación de la comunidad latina en el mundo de la investigación. Además de su interés en programación/IA/matemáticas, Pablo es un músico activo, le encanta correr (6 maratones hasta ahora, incluyendo Boston!), y discutir política y activismo. Sofía was born in Mexico City, were she spent most of her youth. She studied Mathematics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). After graduating, she was awarded a grant from the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt) to pursue a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Warwick in the UK; her field of mathematical expertise is low-dimensional dynamical systems and renormalization theory. After completing her degree in the UK, she worked as a Postdoc at the University of São Paulo (Brazil) and at Imperial College London. After having a successful career as a mathematician, she decided to change fields to work full-time in Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. She was the research leader of the Ethics Group who worked on the National AI Agenda for Mexico. Currently, she works for the Alliance on Artificial Intelligence of the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt) in Mexico. She is passionate about traveling and has spent a considerable amount of time exploring Asia and South America. She also enjoys photography and has a photo blog.
Sofía nació y creció en la Ciudad de México. Ella estudió matemáticas en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Al terminar sus estudios, recibió una beca del CONACyT para realizar un doctorado en Matemáticas en la Universidad de Warwick en el Reino Unido. Sofía es especialista en sistemas dinámicos bajo dimensionales y en teoría de renormalización. Tras obtener su título de Doctorado, trabajó como postdoc en la Universidad de São Paulo (Brasil) y en el Imperial College London. Después de una prominente carrera en Matemáticas, ella decidió hacer un cambio y dedicarse completamente a la ética en inteligencia artificial. Sofía fue la líder de investigación del Grupo de Ética que trabajó en la Agenda Nacional de IA para México. Actualmente, Sofía trabaja para la Alianza en Inteligencia Artificial del CONACyT en México. Ella adora viajar y ha pasado un buen tiempo explorando Asia y Suramérica. Sofía también disfruta de la fotografía y tiene un blog con su trabajo fotográfico.
Juan Carrasquilla was born in Rionegro (Antioquia) in Colombia. Juan’s research interests are at the intersection of condensed matter physics, quantum computing, and machine learning. He completed his Ph.D. in Physics at SISSA, the International School for Advanced Studies in Italy, and was a Postdoc at Georgetown University, and the Perimeter Institute. Juan was also a research scientist at D-Wave Systems, Inc. He is currently a faculty member at the Vector Institute and a Canada CIFAR AI chair.
Juan Carrasquilla nació en Rionegro (Antioquia) en Colombia. Los intereses de investigación de Juan están en la intersección de la física de ateria condensada, la computación cuántica y el aprendizaje automático. Juan terminó su doctorado en Física en SISSA, la Escuela Internacional de Estudios Avanzados en Italia, y realizó un postdoctorado en la Universidad de Georgetown y el Instituto Perimeter. Juan también trabajo como investigador en D-Wave Systems, Inc. Actualmente, Juan es miembro de la facultad del Vector Institute y presidente de Canadá CIFAR AI.
Vianey Leos Barajas was born in León, México, and grew up in California. She obtained her PhD in Statistics at Iowa State University, with a focus on modeling of animal movement. She actively collaborates with shark scientists across the world and has been part of the American Elasmobranch Society for the past 5 years. She was a postdoctoral researcher in Statistics and Forestry and Environmental Resources for 11 months at North Carolina State University. Vianey is now an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, cross-appointed between Statistical Sciences and the School of the Environment, as well as a faculty affiliate at the Vector Institute. She enjoys collaborative work, with projects ranging from using image recognition to identify eagles, analyzing white shark movements to researching generative models of sheep movement. Vianey loves rock en español and her two cats.

Hizo un postdoctorado en los departamentos de estadística, ciencias forestales y recursos ambientales por 11 meses en la Universidad Estatal de Carolina del Norte. Activamente colabora por todo el mundo con científicos que estudian tiburones, y ha formado parte de la sociedad estadounidense de elasmobranquios por 5 años. Actualmente Vianey es una profesora en la Universidad de Toronto en el departamento de ciencias estadísticas y escuela del medio ambiente, y además está afiliada con el Instituto Vector. Le gusta el trabajo colaborativo, con proyectos que incluyen el reconocimiento de águilas usando imágenes, el análisis de los movimientos del tiburón blanco, y la investigación de modelos generativos del movimiento de ovejas. Vianey ama el rock en español y sus dos gatos.
