Puerto Rican Festival 2026
Saturday, August 1, 2026, LMC was honored to walk in the Puerto Rican Parade for the first time in Rochester, NY! We met so many people in the community that now know our faces and LMC as a resource for our Latino veterans.
It was great reconnecting with Al Burgos, from Burgos Income Tax. He was representing his father, Jose Burgos, that served in the 65 Infantry Regiment Boriqueneers 🫡🇵🇷
We also caught up with the one and only, Martin Pedraza, who served in Vietnam 🫡🇵🇷
Thank you @roc_prfestival for allowing us to participate this year! We can’t wait to see you all in the community and next year ❤️🤍💙

On Wednesday, November 19, 2025, our Chair Kathy Quiñones, spoke at Cornell University on a panel discussing “With Duty and Dignity: Veteran Human Rights” hosted by Veterans Law Practicum, Gender Justice Clinic, & NYS Department of Veteran Services.
Kathy provided insights on veterans + immigration and the negative connotations & barriers immigrant service member face during service; and human rights in the veteran context and how access to veteran benefits are impacted based on the location of services.
Kathy was asked, "Where do you see the biggest gaps between veterans rights in theory and their lived realities?"
She responded, "While in service all our basic needs are provided such as housing, health care, support, a job. Once a veteran is out of the service their struggles begin with limited job opportunity, housing cost, supporting their families, in addition to lack of support, or knowledge where to get the help they need. Our LMC works in the inner city where many veterans gave up after service. It causes drug or alcohol use, homelessness, isolation, suicidal tendencies. We are there to provide that support, knowledge, guidance to obtain benefits they have earned, and health care. Our mission is to ensure they are able to go forward and be empowered to change their lives."
Kathy was then asked her insights on veterans + immigration.
She shared, "Although I heard misconceptions such as 'They are here just to get their citizenship then go away! How can we trust them?' My experience with working/serving with non-citizens came while deployed in Afghanistan in the G1 Section. One of our soldiers had received his citizenship. Our Officer in Charge saw this as an opportunity and assigned him to work with non-citizens to obtain citizenship while during the deployment. He worked tirelessly to follow thru at every step of the process. He successfully helped 10 soldiers get their citizenship. Current immigration laws are creating obstacles for non-citizens that served. The current administration, assumptions, and media is making it difficult for non-citizens veterans to continue with the process of obtaining citizenship and instead face deportation."

No veteran shall be left behind.
Thanks to the 1012+ powerful voices of our veteran community, local advocates, and the leaders who listened, RTS will now shuttle veterans to the VA Outpatient Clinic! Starting July 14, Monday-Friday 7:30am-2:30pm, a new shuttle service will transit veterans and community members every 20 minutes between Hylan Drive Connection Hub & Marketplace mall to the VA Outpatient Clinic on Calkins Road.
This victory is more than transportation, it is about access to healthcare, respect for our service, and the power of collective action.
🎗️📝 To our fellow veterans who signed, shared, posted our sticker, and spoke up, this would not have been possible without you. Your stories moved hearts, but your advocacy moved systems!
⭐️🙏🏾We would like to thank the Latino Military Coalition for their persistence in making this mountain move for our veterans' access to healthcare. Thank you to our community allies, New York State, Monroe County, & the City of Rochester elected officials, RTS, and VA leadership who took our concerns seriously and took action. Special thank you to Combat News, Sarge Mitchell, Sam LoTemple, Tracy DiFlorio, Paul Ippolito, Bill Adams, and Channel 8’s Oran Spitzer. Your support shows what is possible when leadership listens and gives us a voice to share our lived experience.
To every person who believed in this cause: You were seen. You were heard. And together, we made change happen.
This is a reminder that when we show up for each other, we win for equity, dignity, and the voices of all veterans.

Our veterans shouldn’t have to fight for a safe ride to their doctor’s appointment.
Right now in Rochester, NY, the VA Outpatient Clinic has no direct bus stop. Veterans are being left to walk over a mile on unsafe roads—many of them disabled or elderly. This isn’t just inconvenient- it’s dangerous and unjust.
We’re calling on local and state leaders to reactivate the bus stop and restore dignity and safety to our veterans.
Sign the petition now and share with your community: https://chng.it/nmPDT8bWY6
