Watch: Buchanan A Finalist For Mac

More players can join the watch list during the regular season before a national media panel selects the winner from a group of finalists. First awarded in 1995, the Buchanan includes past recipients such as Dexter Coakley, Rashean Mathis, Jared Allen and Arthur Moats.

The first 35-man Buck Buchanan Award watch list is released in the preseason by STATS FCS. The list has updated periodically throughout the regular season, culminating in the invitation of finalists to attend the banquet.

Illinois State linebacker Zeke Vandenburgh is the 28th recipient of the Buck Buchanan Award after beating out fellow finalists John Pius (William & Mary) and David Walker (Central Arkansas). Vandenburgh had 100 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and an interception during the 2022 season.

The 2022 FCS Award finalists have been named, with players making the final cut for the Walter Payton, Buck Buchanan and Jerry Rice Awards. The winners for the Payton and Buchanan awards will be announced on Jan. 7 and the winner for the Rice award will be announced on Dec. 7.

All 15 FCS conferences are represented on the watch list, which includes 2021 Buchanan Award recipient Isaiah Land of Florida A&M, 2020 Buchanan Award recipient Jordan Lewis of Southern and 13 other past finalists.

Voting from a panelof FCS sports information directors, writers, broadcasters and otherfootball experts will be conducted after the regular season ends. Threefinalists will be announced on Nov. 30 and will be invited to the 23rdannual Sports Network Awards banquet on Dec. 17 in Chattanooga, TN.,the night before the NCAA Division I championship game. The WalterPayton Award and the Eddie Robinson Award will also be presented thatnight.

Two-time defending Big Sky champion Eastern Washington features a returning finalist in senior linebacker Ronnie Hamlin, who finished 12th a year ago. Five of the Big Sky winners have been defensive ends, and this year the conference has two nominees at the position in Southern Utah junior James Cowser and Wagenmann.

Five other nominees were finalists last season: Coastal Carolina linebacker Quinn Backus, who was seventh; Norfolk State linebacker Lynden Trail, eighth; Chattanooga defensive end Davis Tull, 13th; Missouri State safety Caleb Schaffitzel, 15th; and Harvard defensive end Zach Hodges, 16th. Each is a senior this season.

In total, there are 13 previous finalists on the watch list, which features all 15 FCS conferences. Two prior winners are on the list: 2021 recipient Isaiah Land of Florida A&M and 2020 recipient Jordan Lewis of Southern.

Jordan, who was named to the preseason watch list prior to the 2021 season, is looking to become the fifth Lion to earn Buchanan Award finalist honors. Former SLU standouts Robert Alford (2012, 18th-place finish), Isiah Corbett (2014, 22nd), Harlan Miller (2015, 25th) and Sione Teuhema (2017, 11th) have been candidates for the top honor.

Tom Schreiber (Toronto) and Lyle Thompson (Georgia) have also been nominated for the Sportsmanship Award. Dan Dawson (Toronto) and John LaFontaine (Albany) are the other finalists for Teammate of the Year. be457b7860
