Last line no longer available

The "Last Line No Longer Available" error message has been known to happen after a recent update. After that, the device can't choose a line to make the phone call you want it to make. Most of the time, the problem is caused by eSIM or Dual-SIM being turned on.

What is Last line no longer available

On an iPhone with dual-SIM functionality, this error seems to affect the preferred line. The problem could happen if you have more than one cell phone plan linked to your iPhone using both a standard SIM and an eSIM.

Most of the time, the error seems to happen when you try to make a call from the "default" SIM using the recent call log under Phone > Recent. You'll get an error message that gives you the option to call from your "remaining" line. You can tap "Call" in the box that appears, but keep in mind that this will call from whatever number isn't your default.

What Causes ‘Last Line No Longer Available’ Issue to Occur on iPhone?

For those who don't know, iOS lets you set your default line (phone number), which iMessage and FaceTime use when you have two SIM cards in your device. Also, you can use the iPhone's default line when calling or messaging someone who isn't in your Contacts app. Depending on your needs, you can set your default line for calls and messages and use the other line only for cellular data.

Users can't call a person through their preferred SIM card because of the error. So, they have no choice but to use the last line for that. Well, we'll show you how to fix the "Last Line No Longer Available" error on your new iPhone 13.

What iPhone models are affected

This mistake first showed up in 2018 with the iPhone XS and XS Max, which were Apple's first phones with two SIM cards. Since then, the problem has affected any iPhone that can use two SIM cards. All versions of the iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone SE (2022), and iPhone 14 are included (including Pro and Max models).

How to Fix ‘Last Line No Longer Available’

1. Turn airplane mode on or off

Believe it or not, airplane mode is the first thing I do when my iPhone has a problem with the network. Most of the time, if there is a problem with the network, I can fix it by turning off and on the radios. So, try this cool hack before moving on to the other fixes below.

If your iPhone doesn't have a home button, swipe down from the top right corner of the screen to get to the Control center. Tap on the airplane mode icon to turn it on.

Tap the airplane mode icon again after a few seconds to turn it off and start using your network connection again. Now, dial any contact on your iPhone using your preferred SIM card to see if the "last line is no longer available" problem is fixed.

2. Clear your call history

Several iPhone users who got the error "Last Line No Longer Available" said that clearing the recent call log fixed the problem. Even though it sounds strange, we have found some strange but effective ways to solve problems in the past. So, you shouldn't miss this one either.

Open the Phone app on your iPhone, go to the Recents tab at the bottom, and tap "Edit" in the top right corner of the screen. Then tap the "Clear" button at the top left of the screen. After that, choose "Clear All" to confirm that you want to delete everything. Now, turn your iPhone back on.

Try calling from the default line after your device has been turned back on. If the pop-up doesn't show up, you've fixed the problem.

3. Restart your iPhone

Force restarting your iPhone, which is also called a "hard reset," clears out the cache and gets rid of useless temporary files. This is often enough to fix many iOS problems. So, you should also give this clever solution a try.

Press the volume up button on an iPhone 8 or later. Then quickly press the button to turn the volume down. Then, hold down the power button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Press and hold the power button and the volume down button at the same time on an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Hold down the power button and the home button at the same time on an iPhone 6s or earlier until the screen goes black and the Apple logo appears.

4. Stop making calls over WiFi

WiFi calling is a useful feature, especially for people who are often in places with poor cell phone coverage but good WiFi reception. But WiFi calling can sometimes cause problems, like the error message "last line no longer available." This error can be fixed if you turn off WiFi calling. Here's how to do it.

Go to Phone > Settings > WiFi Calling.

To turn off WiFi Calling on your iPhone, turn off the switch next to it.

5. Get the most recent version of iOS for your iPhone

The first is an obvious one: make sure you are using the latest version of iOS. Errors like this one are often caused by bugs, so updating your iPhone's software by going to Settings > General > Software Update will remove a large variable. You can also try updating your available carrier settings by going to Settings > General > About and tapping "Update" when asked.
