I found myself watching the Arnold Schwarzenegger action comedy 'Last Action Hero' this evening. Later I learned from wikipedia that Timothy Dalton had a cameo in the film. It struck me as odd that i could miss it, as the film has many celebrity cameos which are made pretty evident to the audience.

Sadly, I think the script went over Dalton's head or under his nose. Dalton dismissed Last Action Hero in an interview, as a generic action film he had no interest being involved in. Too bad. LAH is much smarter action film then it gets credit for. Sure, it underperformed. But I think LAH could have done Dalton more good than bad.

You are right. I did not see Salt Water Moose. I did finally see Time Share. *Gasp* I enjoyed it. It was typical family fare like something from Disney. Definitely not Dalton's best work but I enjoyed it just the same as I enjoy bad action movies.

Not true at all! Dalton did several films in fairly quick succession. What *seems* to have killed his career was the unfortunate incident of "Lady Caroline Lamb". Dalton was dropped at the last minute. There was litigation. Dalton apparently grew disgusted with the industry and so returned to the stage.

Ive rewatched this movie a few times it has too be said its amazing! Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the part perfect and I cant even picture anyone else playing the role better. Its funny and great classic action.

Robert Prosky) Danny loves movies and one day get a magic ticket that takes him into an action movie SOUNDS CRAP BUT STAY WITH ME! he meets (Arnold Schwarzenegger) Jack Slater badass cop who doesnt know hes a movie character STAY WITH ME! (Charles Dance) villain Benedict is played incredibly "if god were a villain he'd be me" WHAT A LINE!

and perfect for a re:View, especially given the boys' penchant for action schlock. this movie takes the piss out of 90s action movies, exaggerating all of the tropes to the point of parody, and is genuinely entertaining. between Arnold Braunschweiger, people flying through windshields, and cars exploding for no reason, this feels like the Austin Powers of action movies. i love it!

I feel like this movie gets a lot of flack, but its such a good satire on the action genre. Arnold is at the peak of his popularity, and i love that its John McTiernan himself spoofing his own type of work.

Oh, also, Last Action Hero came out one week after Jurassic Park. This movie had no chance. Yes, one week after one of the most thoughtfully crafted, perfectly executed action-adventure movies of all time, of course Last Action Hero is going to come off as a mess.

The movie mainly takes place in the universe of the fictional "Jack Slater" movie franchise, with Schwarzenegger playing the action hero as a young boy is teleported from the real world into Slater's reality.

It's a neat idea, and 'Last Action Hero' has a handful of funny scenes to support it. Early on, bored at school, Danny fantasizes about Schwarzenegger taking over for Laurence Olivier in 'Hamlet' and blowing the hell out of Denmark. In Slater's crazy celluloid universe, the LAPD is populated by all sorts of wacko cops in outlandish uniforms. Blink-and-you'll-miss-'em celebrity cameos pop up all over (Sharon Stone as Catherine Trammel, Robert Patrick as the T-1000, Danny DeVito as the voice of an animated cat detective). The film takes pot-shots at action movie clichs like the crusty police captain, the hero's bad puns, the overly-talky killer, the cop killed with only two days to retirement, a chase through the oft-used L.A. River, and many ridiculous stunts and explosions. Schwarzenegger is plenty game to send-up his own persona and career. And the meta-filmic twists go into overdrive when the main villain (Charles Dance, delightfully creepy) escapes into the real world with a plot to disrupt the 'Jack Slater IV' premiere and kill the true Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Unfortunately, these things take up maybe 15-20 minutes of screen time in a 131-minute movie. Whatever good ideas the original script may have held were eventually watered down through countless rewrites, studio interference, test screening feedback, and last-minute reshoots. Danny is an incredibly whiny and annoying lead character that engenders no audience sympathy at all. (I can't blame poor Austin O'Brien too much; I'm sure the kid did exactly what everyone asked of him.) The hiring of John McTiernan (from 'Predator' and 'Die Hard') also turned out to be a much bigger mistake than anyone realized. The director may be deft with the action stuff, but has no sense of comedy whatsoever. Far too many of the gags in the movie are thuddingly unfunny. For long stretches of the film, everyone seems to forget that they're making a spoof of dumb action movies, and instead just proceed to make a dumb action movie.

As one of its most notorious bombs, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has never treated 'Last Action Hero' with much respect. The initial DVD release was a stripped-down affair with no bonus features. All it had was a widescreen transfer on one side of the disc and a pan & scan transfer on the other. Eventually, the studio discontinued the widescreen version and reissued the disc with just the pan & scan transfer. In the process, nobody bothered to change the packaging or even the UPC number to warn buyers about what they were purchasing. It's that latter version that has been the only edition of the film to remain in print for the last several years.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's lasting appeal has kept the movie in circulation. The studio knows that it can count on his fan base to buy anything with his name on it. As such, now we have a new Blu-ray edition. Keeping with tradition, Sony has once again taken the "bare bones" approach. To really rub in how little they care for it, the disc has utterly nondescript cover art, a generic plot description on the back of the packaging, a bland menu, and no supplements of note. Then again, at least this disc doesn't have any annoying promos or trailers before the menu. That's a rarity for Sony.

Like I stated initially, I got the tremendous feeling that I was watching a different version of Last Action Hero, except this time instead of an action movie it was a martial arts film. It uses the same premise of a kid in possession of some object that has the ability to take him to a place far outside reality. While in that land he plays an important role in the outcome of all of the characters involved. I even half expected Jet Li or Jackie Chan to follow the kid back to the real world to help him out with some of the local bullies who had been bothering him. This should have been called "Last Kung-Fu Hero" instead of The Forbidden Kingdom.

I couldn't really figure out what kind of movie this was trying to be. It jumped back and forth between drama, flirtatious romance, action and fantasy. This wasn't a full fledged kid's movie either. Although not gory, there are some definitely intense scenes with someone getting shot, people getting stabbed and small amounts of blood. It seemed like it was trying to ride that line of being tame enough for younger children while having a bit of danger to appeal to the older crowd. They might have been able to show the playful kid's side and the dangerous older kid's side but they definitely didn't go together seamlessly. Instead, the transitions between the two were abrupt and kind of distracting to the overall feel of the movie.

Danny is obsessed with a fictional movie character action hero Jack Slater. When a magical ticket transports him into Jack's latest adventure, Danny finds himself in a world where movie magic and reality collide. Now it's up to Danny to save the life of his hero and new friend.

Simultaneously one of the great action parodies because beyond the expertly crafted Looney Tunes visual gags, on a filmmaking level it's frequently indistinguishable from the real thing (god McTiernan) and one of the best movies about a movie star literally wrestling with their own Hollywood fantasy image and myth. "You've brought me nothing but pain!"

Last action Hero. The playfield magnets, these are very troublesome, most times the small magnet board underneath has a blown transistor that has also taken out the fuse beside it. These magnets are really a large coil that can burn out, these can be checked with a multi meter to ensure no dead shorts.

This version plays much closer to the classic Double Dragon games, enabling players to move into the background and foreground. The driving parts have been completely left out, and the cutscenes are nowhere to be seen. Most of the controls have been much more simplified from the DOS version, with most attacks just being a combination of up or down and the action button, and unlike in the DOS game, most attacks are pulled off reasonably quickly. Arnie himself moves as slowly as ever, and he also walks like a gorilla. The game basically leads you from one fight into another, with the only controllable parts being the battle sections, and the rest is done by the CPU. e24fc04721
