The use of picture books are a great way to help younger students learn about Black Canadian history in a way that they can enjoy and understand. The following book lists include resources that would be appropriate for students from Kindergarten to Grade 5. Please be sure to read and review all materials prior to using them with your students.
Elementary and Secondary Book Lists - Grades 5 to 12
In order to meet the diverse needs of learners, these book lists will contain a variety of different types of texts, as well as fiction and nonfiction material. Some of the books can be used to teach about Black history and others are written by Black Canadian authors. There are lots of choices and engaging books that students will enjoy reading!
Secondary Book Lists - Grades 9 to 12
Having a variety of texts is important for a high school audience to increase engagement and interest. Although some of the texts on the list could be used beyond high school, educators can use their professional judgement and select parts of texts for classroom use.
