The Centre for the Investigation of Mathematics (CIMAT), will be hosting the 2026 Latin American School of Information Theory + Statistics
from Monday, August 3rd to Friday, August 7th in Guanajuato, Mexico.
The school will offer graduate students and postdoctoral researchers the opportunity to interact closely with leading experts in information theory and statistics through short lectures and discussions, as well as the chance to showcase their own research.
Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers working in information theory, statistics, and related fields (broadly interpreted) are encouraged to apply by submitting the title and a brief abstract for a poster they would like to present. The school will also include engaging social events!
In the memory of Dr. Mario Diaz, topics at this school will include Trustworthy ML and Probability Theory.
Guanajuato is a charming, walkable city nestled in a narrow valley in central Mexico. Known for its vibrant colors, colonial architecture, and underground roadways, it’s one of Mexico’s most photogenic cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Address: CIMAT, Jalisco S/N, Valenciana, 36240 Guanajuato
Weather in August: Mild and sunny during the day (20–25°C / 68–77°F), cooler at night (12°C / 54°F). Bring layers.
Language: Spanish is the main language, but many people working in tourism speak some English.
Currency Exchange and ATMs: The Mexican Peso is the currency of Mexico. Since some services, such as taxis, cannot be paid by credit card, we advise you to purchase Mexican pesos at currency exchange agencies (“Casas de cambio”) or withdraw cash from ATMs at Mexico City Airport or Bajío Airport (BJX). In Guanajuato, ATMs and currency exchange agencies are available downtown, though not near CIMAT’s facilities.
Airport Information: You can fly into Guanajuato International Airport (BJX), located approximately 45 minutes from the venue. The airport offers direct flights from Houston, Los Angeles (LAX), Dallas/Fort Worth, and other major cities, so you likely will not need a layover in Mexico City. Taxis are available from the airport to Guanajuato City.
