Dragoon Guide

Change Log

Introduction

"The Dragoons.

They are the professional monster hunters trained by the Empire. The first Dragoon and the leader of the others, Marx, who is also known as Jager, pays a visit to the Imperial lords who own combat slaves, picks out slaves who are most sensitive to Sirocco's energy, and immediately sends them to the Empire.

These slaves, unlike the other Demonic Lancers, are completely isolated from other groups and learn the monster-tracking and hunting techniques and combat arts that the Empire has secretly developed. When their training is complete, they hold a festival of their own called the Red Moon Festival, in which ten warriors who caught bigger game than the others are selected and named Dragoons and sent out to different places on the Arad Continent."

Skills

This section recommends which skills to prioritize. It follows a standard dragoon skill build. They can choose to focus on their lower-level skills via using Acrobatic Rhombus. More on this can be read upon in the 'Low-Level' build section.

TL;DR Skill Build

Note: This is my personal build. Skill point allocation may differ from person to person.

Buff Skill

Mana Extraction

Max
Increases your Basic/Skill Atk. Max this skill and increase it's levels further (up to 20) with the use of Buff Swap Enhacements.

Passive Skills

Passive skills are easily discernible with their green hue. I won't go into detail for most of these since many of them are just raw damage increases. Max these skills.

Dragoon Heavy Armor Mastery

Increases your Intelligence, Vitality, Spirit, MP Recovery, Max HP/MP, Magical Crit Rate.

It's important to retexturize to heavy armor as this skill provides a substantial boost to your Intelligence.

Hunter's Moveset

Just changes your x-string attacks to be specific to the dragoon class.

Beam Spear Mastery

Increases your Magical Weapon Atk, Atk Speed, and crit rate.

Dragoon's "battle passive." This skill is maxed out at 10 levels with skill points, but can be increased further using gear (explained later).

Hunter's Sharpness

Increases Critical Atk and Hit Rate.

Budget battle passive. Same as above but may be cheaper to acquire.

Lingering Sensation

Increases Skill Atk, decreases Servant Lance cooldown.

Fountain of Power

Increases Skill Atk, Attack Speed, Hit Rate.

Keravnos

Increases Skill Atk. Changes the mechanics of some skills. Travel further during Buffalo Fall, Able to cast Wing Skewer midair.

Backstep Upgrade

More or less a preference, but highly recommended. Can be useful to escape some long skill animations when an enemy is about to smack you or to quickly get out of being tossed around by knock-back.

Active Skills

I will mostly only go into detail on dragoon advancement-specific skills. For the most part, you can safely ignore any active skills lv.20 and below. The chart below provides a ranking based on the skill's damage.

Damage:Cooldown Calculations

Note that this is post-rework. This just gives a general idea of how strong skills are in terms of raw damage. More importantly, it's important to take note of the Damage:Cooldown % (Last column). This means that some skills are overall better due to higher damage output in a sustain scenario.

Servant Lance Skills

These skills can be used during the animation of most dragoon skills and has no cast time.

Servant Lance - Lv. 15

Lv. 1
Basically free extra damage. Automatically fires magic lances during x-strings and skills. Can be toggled on/off but you should just keep it on. Sadly this skill maxed at lv. 1.

Servant Lance: Assault - Lv. 25

Preference / Dump skill points
Hold
(Ground) Fires off a single lance
(Aerial) Deals (very) slightly more damage, drops multiple lances in an area around you.

Max this skill if you are using Acrobatic Rhombus earring.

Servant Lance: Engager - Lv. 30

Max
Provides decent grouping and decent damage on a low cd ability. Max.

Dragoon Skills

"Let the hunt begin!"

Endure - Lv. 10

Preference
Provides some damage reduction during the skill duration. Honestly not too useful in end-game content.

Surround Break - Lv. 15

Keep at Lv.1
All lancers share this ability. Use it as a mobility skill to move around faster or dodge enemy attacks.

Mole Hunt - Lv. 15

Lv.0 or  Lv.1
Filler skill like Needler.

Needler - Lv. 20

Lv.0 or  Lv.1
I like to keep this skill at 1 as a filler skill to use while I'm waiting for cooldowns.

Buffalo Fall - Lv. 25

Preference
Low cooldown and decent damage for a non-cube skill. Better used primarily as your main dash skill.

Max this skill if you are using Acrobatic Rhombus earring.

Wing Skewer - Lv. 30

Max
Good burst, range, and somewhat low cooldown. Max this ability. Can be used midair.

Locust Burning - Lv. 35

Max
Groups enemies, decent AoE, Good Damage. Max.
You can hold the Up arrow key during the animation to make yourself jump into the air. Midair, you have the option of comboing into other skills.

Ram Fence - Lv. 35

Lv.1
Groups enemies a little, has good range, but the damage to cooldown ratio is too low to max this ability. Even though this ability falls somewhere in the mid-range in terms of damage for Dragoon's skills, Buffalo Fall has a lower cooldown and does more damage for sustain. I keep this skill as a filler.

Head Penetration - Lv. 40

Lv.1
Hold
This skill is sadly overshadowed by other skills. Keep this skill at Lv. 1 since it provides I-Frames while you're in the air. Save this skill to dodge certain unavoidable attacks.
Can be used midair.

Scale Grinder - Lv. 45

Preference/ Lv.0 / Lv.1
Casts out lots and lots of spears. Does good damage, long animation duration can be ended early by canceling the skill with 'C.' Doing this does not reduce the skill's damage, so you should always be canceling it.**

Note: The skill is actually currently bugged/behaves differently when canceling it midair. Skill will end early and not deal its full damage.

I actually don't recommend this skill anymore, especially if you are no longer running the talisman. I recommend maxing Earthworm Hunt, Buffalo Fall and your Servant Lance Skills instead.

Partisan Skewer - Lv. 60

Max
Throw the Talisman on this skill and it becomes Dragoon's bread-and-butter skill. Great damage on a medium cooldown. Can be used midair for a much shorter animation. Max !!!

You can hold down the directional key opposite of where you are facing to prevent yourself from moving forward.

Earthworm Hunt - Lv. 70

Max
High cooldown, damage is relatively low for a level 70 skill. Launches you into the air when used on the ground, great tool to start aerial combos.

Can be used midair (launches you down at the enemy).

Aven Hunting - Lv. 75

Max
Base skill does decent damage, high cooldown. Pair with the talisman for a huge damage boost to this skill.
Can be cast midair.

Deboning Slasher - Lv. 80

Max
Huge spinning death wheel. High cooldown, but is one of Dragoon's highest damage skills. Max this skill.
Can be cast midair.

Insidious Pike Lv. 95

Max
Large AoE and great damage. It's a 3rd Advancement skill so the cooldown is pretty long. Still, Max. Can be used midair and during other skills.

Awakening Skills

"The hunting festival of the Red Moon will never end."

Dragon Slayer - Lv. 50

Automatically Maxed
Hold
1st Awakening Skill. You won't really be using this skill once you have your 3rd Awakening.  You should have your 3rd Awakening skill bound to this one.

Deadly Charge - Lv. 85

Automatically Maxed
Hold
2nd Awakening skill. Big spear do stabby. Automatically detects and targets bosses so it should never miss. should.

Red Moon Festival - Lv. 100

Max
3rd Awakening (3A) skill. Unlimited Blade Works. You should be near the enemy when using this skill since it has a opening attack that can miss if you are too far away. The 2nd final attack will lock onto the enemy. should.

TP Skills

Simply boosts the power of certain skills. Won't go too in-depth here, basically just max the corresponding TP skill for skills you maxed.

Talismans & Runes

Talismans can be farmed at exile mountains. If your character is already geared in a 105 set, soloing exile mountains should prove to be pretty easy. Talismans and runes can be bought and rerolled with Dark Night's Scar.

Rune colors should be Purple, Blue, Red (PBR) for the highest damage increase towards Partisan Skewer. Optionally, you can also use Purple, Green, Blue (PGB) for the highest cooldown reduction (Not recommended though lol).

TL;DR Recommended Talismans

Raging Tiger

Must Have
Greatly reduces animation time. Great boost to its damage. Makes it one of Dragoon's best skills. Use this.

Details

Spear attack count set to 2.
Ground explosion range +20%
Spear attack Atk. +128%
Ground explosion Atk. +14%

Talisman Additional Effects
- Can also be cast in midair.

- Additional multi-attack Atk. bonus +24%
- Additional ground explosion Atk. +34%
- Cast in midair to increase ground explosion Atk. +125%

Second Grinder

Highly Recommended
Now you have TWO spinning death wheels. Excellent damage increase, improves the skill structure (tl;dr less buggy).

Details

Creates a grinder in each hand, and then throws them at the front area.
The non-moving/forward multi-hit attacks are combineed into a single multi-hit attack.
Combined multi-hit Atk.: 102% of the non-moving multi-hit Atk.
1 additional explosion attack Explosion Atk. -42%

Talisman Addition Effects
Magic spear spinning and explosion
- Size +15%
- Atk +18%

Hunting Shalit

Highly Recommended
Insanely good option. The talisman provides a great boost in damage to the skill, in addition to providing I-frames during this skill.

Details

The lance throwing attack also shoots 3 Keravnoses from your back.
Lance-throwing and swinging Atk. +10%
3 Keravnoses' total Atk.: 27% of the throwing atk.

Talisman Addition Effects
-The lance-swinging attack shatters the 3 Keravnoses in the ground, additionally inflicting damage once.
-Additional attack Atk.: 21% of the swinging Atk.
-Makes you invincible for the skill's duration.

Catastrophe

Preference
Sends out a greater quantity of spears. Lower cooldown and great damage boost. This talisman's priority has been moved down since Dragoon's renewal. Still a good option, but the previous talismans are just better.

Details

Magic spear shot count +15
Magic spear Movement Speed +100%
Magic spear acceleration +700%
Magic spear duration -45%
Magic spear Atk. -30%
Cooldown -10%

Talisman Additional Effects
- Magic spear shot count +10
- Magic spear-shooting interval -50%
- Finishing Atk +13%

Talisman Showcase

Tireless

Preference
Gives two charges to the skill. This talisman isn't too bad of an option now and gives you more flexibility for your combos, but the previous talismans are just so much better in terms of damage increases.

Details

Can be charged up to twice.
Each cast Atk.: 57%
Each charge cooldown: 20 sec

Talisman Additional Effects
- Charging speed +10%
- Additional Atk. +19%

Batu Support

Preference
Changes the skill structure of the skill quite a bit. After, sends out a spinning disk that lasts for a short duration and groups enemies. Reduces the cooldown. No longer pushes enemies but has improved grouping. Increases the animation duration. Low damage increase compared to other Talismans.

Details

Throws the lance during the push to gather enemies.
Push decision removed.
Spinning magic spear Atk.: 5% of pushing Atk. (Max hits: 20)
Cooldown -10%

Talisman Additional Effects
- Attack range +10%
- Rising Atk. +20%
- Spinning magic lance Atk. +20%

Sparrow Hawk Onslaught

Not Recommended
Changes the skill structure significantly, while grounded, sends out a spear that lands in front of you after a short delay. Increases the AoE of this ability and decreases the cooldown. Not much increase to the damage.

You can still cast the original skill by using the skill midair.

Details

Cast on the ground to drop Servant Lance onto the default landing location in magic spear form.
Cooldown -10%

Talisman Additional Effects
- Spear size +30%
- Attack range +30%
- Shock wave +30%
- Atk. +10%

Enchants

Enchants are basically adding extra stats onto your gear. Although they are considered add-ons, they are not optional. They are relatively easy to obtain in this patch with many competitive options to farm and choose from.

Enchants can come in the form of Beads or Cards. They have essentially the same function, but beads do not require upgrading, whereas cards will often have to be upgraded to acquire the highest stat values.

Enchantment Slots

Use this as a guideline if you have no idea what types of enchants to get. Dragoon is not locked to an Element and can use whatever. Since he is a Magical Percent class, you want to look for enchants with Magical Atk and/or Intelligence. An important note is to ensure you have at least 100% critical chance. Make use of the DFOpedia in-game to find what enchants you're missing and where you can obtain them.

Avatars & Emblems

Avatars extra equipment that are usually associated with cosmetics. For this section, I am mainly referring to Clone Avatars. These equipment pieces come with colored emblem sockets that can be equipped with emblems of the respective color that increase your stats.
Rare avatars are upgrades to clone avatars that also include having platinum emblem sockets on the top and bottom pieces.

Recommended Emblems

Note: If you are still short of 100% Critical Chance, you should slot in Crit Rate emblems until you are able to cap the stat.

Buff Swap, Creatures, Title

Mana Extraction's level can be increased past 10, up to 20, with the use of Fragmented Abyss: Mana Extraction Gear. This gear increases the strength of your buff skill and can be farmed and bought in Operation: Hope or from Shireen in Elvenguard. You should at least have a full set of these to power up your buff skill.

Creatures and titles are further ways to min-max your damage. You should at least consider having on budget options so that you are straight up not missing damage due to missing equipment.

Titles and creatures can be differentiated into two types. Damage type and Buff type.  Having both is not a heavy requirement but allows you to further min-max your character and increase your damage.

How to hit +20 Buff Skill

For maximum min-max you have two options. This is an  expensive option, but luckily Lancer Platinum Emblems tend to be relatively cheaper than other classes. You will also need a set of Rare Avatars for this to work.

Option 1:

Option 2:

Buff Enhancement Example

Title

Damage Titles increase your character's damage by a substantial amount. Any title with a damage modifier will suffice, but you should eventually look into grabbing yourself a decent title as you progress your character (+10-15% Damage Modifier). Some Titles (Platinum) additionally increase the damage of skills in a certain level range (Partisan Skewer is Lv. 60).

Buff Titles increase the level of Mana Extraction by up to 3 levels. This is naturally a raw damage increase, although not as much as the damage title.

Platinum Damage Title Example

+3 Buff Title Example

Creature

Damage Creatures are another form of damage increase, providing extra stats and an extra level one of your passive skills. Most creatures come with an ability that can be used. Any creature with a damage modifier will suffice, but you should eventually look into grabbing yourself a decent creature as you progress your character (+15-18% Damage Modifier / Fountain of Power +1).

Buff Creatures increase the level of Mana Extraction by 1. This is naturally a raw damage increase, although not as much as the damage creature.

Some creatures double up as both Damage and buff (provides +Damage Modifier and +1 Mana Extraction).

Damage Creature Example

Buff Creature Example

Aura

Auras are another form of damage increase, providing extra stats and an extra level one of your passive skills. Most creatures come with an ability that can be used. Any creature with a damage modifier will suffice, but you should eventually look into grabbing yourself a decent aura as you progress your character (+5% Damage Modifier or more).

Motion Auras act similarly to Rare Avatar Top & Bottoms, they contain a Platinum Emblem Socket that can increase the level of Mana Extraction by 1.

Damage Aura Example

Gearing

Important Note: This section details on some beginner-friendly item builds that can be accessed early on in the 110 cap. Unless the epic item is absolutely essential for a certain build, I will avoid recommending epics that require more end-game farming (Ispins, Warpath, etc). Subsequently,  I will not be recommending any custom pieces, but if you want to have an idea of what kind of customs to keep, take a look at this chart.

110 Cap Epics can be bought from Meryl Pioner's Equipment Selection Boxes using Ominous Crystals. Make use of the in-game Equipment Navigator to find where to farm 105 epics.

While not necessary, it is recommended you redeem these boxes during a 'Soup Day.' Meaning redeeming these boxes when the quality (Inferior->Superior) rotation falls during a day when the quality is Superior. Superior quality items provide a small increase in stats over Inferior quality, but more importantly, allow you access to a future epic sub-equipment Optical Combat Glasses which rely on having a full set of Superior Quality epics.

Weapons

 Aspect-Devoured Beam Spear

Stat stick. Also benefit's all of dragoon's Battle Passives, Beam Spear Mastery, Hunter's Sharpness, Lingering Sensation, Fountain of Power, and Keravnos. This weapon is just much stronger on Dragoon. Use this.

Beam Spear of Culmination - Dragoon

Not recommended over the Aspect-Devoured weapon. Offers higher damage to certain skills but a lower amount of total damage increase. Use this weapon for fun or if you want to use it alongside the Cat Stone Build.

'Archon' Build

Basically the recommended 'default' nowadays. Offers a lot of versatility in stats ranging from cooldown reduction, speed, defense, and power.  This build for the most part gets rid of your HP bar (Setting it to 1% permanently). Instead, your Mana becomes as if it were your HP, gaining a much higher mana pool as a result. The damage is relatively lower compared to other builds but you are pretty tanky. Better to be alive and doing some damage than being dead and doing none.

Note: Sader (Except Male Saders) heals are less effective on you since they cannot restore your mana

This set requires the pieces below to be farmed at Destroyed Castle of the Dead and/or bought with Shattered Dusk Crystals. Promised Time for Victory may not be available immediately as it is an Ispins exclusive epic, so use a placeholder epic until then.

Manipulation

Power Plant

Promised Time for Victory

Example Equipment Set

Optional Slots
Magic Stone: Use a placeholder until you can obtain Promised Time for Victory.

'Mana Burn' Build

One of the best starter builds. Can be used in conjunction with a bleed bracelet, and easily replaceable with better epics in the same slot when it is time to upgrade your build. This build revolves around using at least the 3 core pieces below. In exchange for a higher mana cost, your skills gain more damage. You may apply a standard skill build.

Ender's Gaze

Genius Engineer's Multi-tool Belt

Genius Engineer's Thick Protective Boots

Example Equipment Set

Optional Slots
Bracelet & Top: Use whatever status damage you want.
Bottom: Use whatever element you want.
Sub-Equip: Optimal Combat Glasses (Needs average 90% quality on all your equipment).

'Sleep' Build

Dragoon's cube skills have pretty high cooldowns, and this build provides a ton of cooldown to your skills (~50% cdr). The set essentially requires the bracelet to function and some consumable to activate all of its equipment effects (Warlord's Cry / random throwable items). You can buy cheap rocks to throw from Siusha in the Moonlight Tavern.

This build may not be accessible immediately since you need an Ispins-Exclusive epic Long-Cherished Wish.

Long-Cherished Wish

Example Equipment Set

Optional Slots
Bottom: Use whatever element you prefer.
Ring: One-touch Smart Remote Controller (needs Black Dragon fuse bracelet).
Earrings: Choose between Corrupt Soul, Hazy Lament, Law of Gravitation, or Acrobatic Rhombus.

Where to get Consumables

'Non-Cube' Build

Explanation & Playstyle

This build is an alternative option for players looking for a different playstyle.  Since Dragoon has access to a lot of decent low-level skills, an alternative build prioritizing your non-cube skills can be utilized. Offers greater sustain since you have higher damage and lower cooldown on your non-cube skills.

Acrobatic Rhombus will be the main piece for this build, providing +20% Non-Awakening Skill Atk, as well as -30% Skill Cooldown for your Non-cube Skills.

Gray Cat Stone can be used early on, has an effect that increases the Skill Atk and your cooldown recovery rate of your Lv. 15-35 Active skills after you use Basic/Jump/Dash attacks. This effect stacks up, increasing your Skill Atk by 30% and 10% skill cooldown recovery for these skills. Cat Stone may be a little difficult to maintain continuously as it requires you to use x-strings frequently.

Requires custom epics if you want to continue using this build further in the late game (e.g. Ent Spirit Shoulder - Non-Clear Cube Fragment Skill Atk +15%).

Acrobatic Rhombus

Gray Cat Stone

Skill Build

This build requires you to allocate your skills differently. Here are my recommendations. The skill build below focus on increasing the potency of your Non-cube skills.

Example Equipment Set

Optional Slots
Bracelet, Top, & Shoulder: Use whatever status damage you want.
Belt: Starry belt, Rightful duty, Unchanging Floating Stone
Bottom/Sub-Equip: Use whatever element you want.
Sub-Equip: Optimal Combat Glasses (Needs average 90% quality on all your equipment).
