Each fall, over 70,000 Texas high school students begin the All-State audition process. 1,810 are selected to rehearse and perform during the annual TMEA Clinic/Convention in one of 18 Texas All-State ensembles, including four choirs: Mixed Choir, Treble Choir, Tenor-Bass Choir, and Small School Mixed Choir. There are three rounds of auditions, but we'll focus on Region for now. Our students will learn four pieces from which three will be chosen to audition the day of Region. Only excerpts from the chosen pieces will be heard, but students won't know the cuts or the selected pieces until the audition, so it's imperative to learn everything well. On Saturday, October 7, students will check in at Bowie HS and receive a badge number. Someone will warm up all the students together and then announce the cuts and sing through them twice. After that, students can no longer sing until their audition. Once their number is called, they will proceed to a room and perform a "blind audition": the judges are hidden behind a screen. Once they're done singing, they may leave. The judges will give each singer a score and they'll be ranked against others. The top 20 from each section will make it into the Region Choir.
Students who make the Region will be invited to attend a Region 18 Clinic and Concert. The Pre-Area and Area rounds are subsequent to Region and consist of learning more complex pieces and sight-reading. The top 20 in each section will compete at Pre-Area and only the top 5 out of those will go on to compete at Area.
