Laryssa Abdala

I am a 3D C++ Software Engineer at Align Technology, developing the next generation of Invisalign and Vivera orthodontic devices.

I recently graduated from my Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My thesis focused on electro-fluid-mechanical models of the human heart.

Born and raised in Brazil, I have been living in the United States since 2019 when I joined UNC's math graduate program. My passion lies in harnessing the power of mathematical and computational models to address critical healthcare and world challenges. My Ph.D. research focused on creating patient-specific models of the human heart to gain deeper insights into its behavior. To support this endeavor, I developed a robust cardiac electrophysiology library from scratch. This library is set to become an integral part of the IBAMR Software Infrastructure. The project is written in C++, assembled with CMake, version-controlled through Git, and tested with Attest and Github Actions. As I've undertaken this library's development, I've honed my skills in algorithm parallelization, runtime profiling and optimization, allowing me to execute substantial simulations in mere minutes.

My research and coursework choices were made to expand my background in mathematical and computational physiology to bridge the gap between engineers and clinicians.
