What is Modeled Writing?
Modeled writing is when the teacher is demonstrating writing, often thinking aloud as they write. It helps children make the connection between the spoken and written word. Teachers should model by writing clearly, legibly, and talk about writing and why we write.
It includes making lists on large paper, writing chart stories, creating graphs or words on a word wall. Other examples include morning message board or daily news activities. It teaches children many different purposes for writing, along with modeling the writing process – planning, drafting, revising, and even sometimes publishing.
It is required to plan specific shared reading or modeled writing experiences daily; however, it is equally important to capitalize on the many spontaneous opportunities that occur throughout the instructional day.
