As a hub of ongoing learning, libraries are one of the places language learners turn to for resources. Whether the language learner is a school student learning a second language, an immigrant, someone learning a heritage language, someone learning a language for a loved one, or a polyglot learning their fifth language, libraries need to be able to support their needs.
Language Learners in the Library is a blog resource designed to help librarians, library staff, and library science students learn about and provide services to language learners. Through providing these resources, library workers can better understand the information needs and behaviors of language learners and how libraries can best serve these needs. Included in this site is background information, essential vocabulary, historical context, and research on language learners.
This blog will not focus on any one language. Instead, it will look at how various aspects of someone's identity and culture, as well as the area they are in and the language they are learning, impact these information needs. By exploring the broader umbrella of language learning, these resources can be applied or adapted for specific languages or locations.
Hello! I'm Griffin (they/he), a Master of Library and Information Science student at San Jose State University. I have a B.S. in Translation (Spanish concentration) and minors in Professional/Technical Writing and Chinese from Kent State University. Currently, I work as a library associate, where I have seen tremendous need for language support within libraries.
Writing this blog has allowed me the opportunity to learn more extensively about the information needs of language learners. I have been able to learn how essential service to this group of people is, some of the ways this group can be served within libraries, and how service to language learners can improve service to all patrons. Specifically targeting the needs of language learners allows for a library to integrate many different aspects of cultural competency, cultural humility, and diversity within library practices, and provides a foundation upon which to build relationships with the community.
I plan to integrate the lessons I learned from this project into my own librarianship practices. In making small changes, such as sharing the languages I speak on my work badge, I have already begun integrating what I have learned through this project. I also am working to help continue to support multilingual services in the library I work at by helping to support multilingual programming. Another way I can apply the lessons I learned through this project is by getting to know the community members better and working to build relationships with local community organizations that also serve language learners to better support the local community.
I have also build skills in cultural humility, and learned more about the importance of integrating language into these discussions. Through the research I have conducted for this project, it is clear how important providing language inclusivity into library services is for the diversity of the profession and the people libraries serve. It is important to consider the many facets of language learning in these practices as well, as the diversity of language learners is part of the importance in better serving the language learning community in libraries.
