Syllabus

Hello and welcome to CCSF Health 91K – Language Access Strategies and Effective Collaboration with Healthcare Interpreters (LAS) Summer 2020, CRN 53843-932.

Whether you are a seasoned online student, or this is your first online course, enrolling in an online course often fills students with a range of emotions--excitement, fear, and usually a realization that "this is going to be way more work than I expected!" Many students transition to the online environment without understanding the interactivity required of successful online learners. This can result in an expectation of a passive learning experience including a sense of isolation. Students who take online classes thinking they just need to make a few clicks on a computer regularly experience poor academic achievement or a need to withdraw from the course.

You, on the other hand, are on the track for success! Your ticket to success is engaging in the course and interacting with your professor and your peers online.

This one-unit course will be conducted online 100% with no in-person class meetings. The online course will take an average of 17.5 hours per week for 3 weeks. Please set aside time for reading required textbooks and articles, taking quizzes, watching videos and responding to forums and other miscellaneous activities like reading the website, communicating with other students and the instructor, working on your projects, or studying for exams. I suggest logging in every day for a few hours, but if that is impossible, please consider logging in as much as possible, the fewer times you log in, the longer your sessions will need to be. The obvious advantage of an online course is that you do not need to be on campus to attend class every week, but you do need to attend your online class!

The course website will be on Canvas, https://ccsf.instructure.com. After you click on the link, it will ask for your Username and Password. Username is your CCSF username (example: gtang). Your password is your RAMID password.

You are welcome to login to https://ccsf.instructure.com starting the day before class, June 7, 2020. The first time you login please be sure to fill out the Introduction Questionnaire, and you are welcome to click on any of the activities that are available.
