Will it hurt?

Would it surprise you to know this is the most commonly asked question about tattoos? Tattoos can hurt, depending on where you get them. Generally, areas of the body with thicker skin, such as the shoulder or arm, are less painful than areas with thinner skin, such as the wrist or ankle. Everyone has a different pain tolerance, so it's hard to say exactly how much it will hurt for you. If you're worried about pain, there are things you can do to help make your experience more tolerable: get a good rest the night before, eat a hearty meal beforehand, stay hydrated and relax! Keeping tension in your body (either by tensing up or holding your breath) will make it harder for you. Once the endorphins start flowing, you'll be fine, we promise! After all, how many people do you know that only have ONE tattoo? 😉

Aftercare Instructions: How do I take care of my new tattoo?

If you're getting tattooed with us, you will receive an Aftercare Instruction card with information on it. If you have any questions, please contact your tattooer.

What are the different styles of Tattoos?

As tattooing has grown in popularity, more unique styles have developed. Original tattoo styles, such as traditional (old school), Japanese, black and grey, tribal and lettering have stood the test of time, but more modern tattoos have broadened the horizons! Newer tattoo styles, such as neotraditional, watercolor, geometric, script, realism, portrait, pointillism, blackwork, trash polka, fine line, 3D, ignorant style and more are becoming more common. As tattooers, even though we have our favorite styles, we truly love them all.

Whether you are looking for a traditional style tattoo or one with a modern twist, there is sure to be a style that appeals to you. With this much variety out there, there's never been a better time to get tattooed!

What are the most popular Tattoo Placements?

Where you choose to put your tattoo depends on your personal preference, but some locations are more common than others. Traditionally, most tattoos were found on the arm, the back, or ankle. The chest and thigh are also popular placements if you're looking for a less visible location to tattoo.

Be sure to consider your future tattoo goals before you decide on a placement -- you want to choose a location that fits the subject matter and won't get in the way of other future projects! A good rule is to keep the tattoo sized to the placement, for instance, a small tattoo would work better as a gap filler or in a smaller area than in the middle of your back. Your tattoo artist will help you with placement and position, so feel free to reach out with any questions.

And remember, when it comes to tattooing, bigger is always better!

Five Things to look for in a Tattoo Shop

With so many tattoo shops around, how can you choose? Here are five things to consider when choosing a shop for your next piece of body art:

  1. Reputation: Check out reviews to get an idea of the reputation of the shop and the quality of their work. This is something you will be wearing for life, you want to make sure the place you're picking is up for the challenge!

  2. Safety: Make sure the shop adheres to strict safety standards, including the use of single-use needles and proper sterilization procedures.

  3. Atmosphere: Look for a shop with a pleasant atmosphere that is clean and inviting.

  4. Artist: Consider the tattoo artist's experience and portfolio -- make sure they have the skills and an artistic style that you love.

  5. Price: Price is an important factor, but don't be tempted to go with the cheapest option -- quality is key! As we say, a coverup tattoo is more expensive than one done right the first time!

Five Things to do before your First Tattoo

Ready to get your first tattoo? Here are five things to do before you step foot in the tattoo shop

  1. Research the tattoo artist and shop you plan to visit. Make sure they have a good reputation and are experienced with the type of tattoo you're looking for.

  2. Decide on the size, design, and placement of your tattoo. Think about how you want it to look and if you want it to be visible to others. If you have any questions, you can always book a consultation with us!

  3. Be well rested. Sitting for a tattoo will be a lot easier when you have had a full night's sleep! We don't recommend booking your tattoo for the morning after a very late night -- you will definitely feel it a lot more.

  4. Eat a hearty meal and stay hydrated before getting the tattoo. This will help ensure your body is ready for the process. We suggest bringing a snack or a lunch with you if you're planning a long sit.

  5. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes so your tattoo artist can easily access the area you're getting tattooed.

A Quick History of Traditional Tattooing

Tattooing has been a part of humanity since ancient times, from the earliest civilizations to the present day. It is believed that the first tattoos were done with needles made of bone and other materials, with pigment made from plants and minerals. Tattooing has been used as a form of body art, as a form of cultural expression, and as a way to signify important events or experiences in one’s life.

Tattooing was first documented in Egypt in 2000 BC, believed to be used as a form of identification and protection. Even Egyptian mummies have been found with tattoos! Historians believe that the practice was used to identify the dead so they could be properly buried. Tattooing spread to other regions in the Middle East, Asia, and Europe during this time.

In Japan, traditional forms of tattooing have been practiced for centuries. Japanese tattoos, known as irezumi, were used as a form of punishment for criminals and as a symbol of status for elite members of society. The art form was also used to ward off evil and bring good luck. Japanese style tattooing still has a heavy presence in today's tattoo world!

In the West, traditional tattooing has been practiced since the 1700s. During the period of exploration and colonization, tattoos were seen as a form of self-expression and a way to commemorate important events and experiences. Sailors were particularly fond of tattoos, and they would often get tattoos of anchors and other nautical symbols. These tattoos were considered good luck symbols and their popularity spread as they travelled. Americana "old school" tattoos took root in this time, and birthed a whole culture of classic tattooing.

Traditional tattooing is still a popular style of tattooing and due to it's longevity, it is having a resurgence in the recent years. It is no longer used solely for punishment or as a sign of status, but rather as a way to express oneself and one’s values. We have come a long way since the beginning! Whether you choose to get a traditional tattoo or a modern design, we believe it is important to appreciate and respect the history and culture that it is associated with. Here at La Lune Bleu, you will see a wide variety of tattoo art decorating our walls, and we'd love to point out some historical pieces to you if you have a minute to spare!

What is a Custom Tattoo?

A custom tattoo is a tattoo that is designed specifically for you based on your own ideas. The artist will work with you to create an unique design, and this design may include elements from your own life or culture. It may involve complex themes, or it may be a simpler design that focuses on a single symbol or theme. The complexity of your tattoo will depend on the placement and size you want -- for instance, a sleeve tattoo can be more complex and elaborate than a small tattoo on the ankle! Either way, a custom tattoo is a great way to express your individual personality and to create a lasting piece of art that is entirely unique to you.

What is a Flash Tattoo?

"Flash" is pre-designed tattoo art that you can either choose to use as-is, or it can be customized to meet the your unique needs. Flash tattoos are often used as a starting point for the artist and client to come up with a unique design that fits the individual's style. Flash tattoos can range from simple line art to more detailed and vibrant designs. La Lune Bleu has a wide variety of flash art you can view and pick from if you need some inspiration or simply want to give a nod to the old-school traditional tattoo roots.

What is a Gap-Filler Tattoo?

A gap filler is a type of tattoo that is used to fill in gaps between larger tattoos or to fill in any unwanted space. These tattoos are typically smaller designs that are used to create a cohesive look. They can be anything from a single word, symbol, or pattern to a full-blown piece of artwork. Gap filler tattoos are a great way to add character and depth to a larger tattoo or to make an existing tattoo more visually appealing. The most common use of gap fillers are in sleeve work, where larger pieces are tied together with smaller pieces of flash to complete the finished sleeve. Surely you would recognize the traditional dot and star pattern in an old school traditional sleeve!
