BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan

HISTORY OF BORACAY ISLAND

Before the Spanish arrived, Boracay Island was already home to the indigenous Ati people. The Atis lived off the land, primarily relying on fishing, along with small-scale plantations of coconuts, cassava, and potatoes, to sustain themselves. For many years, life on this small, serene island remained simple and peaceful, with little outside influence. It wasn’t until the 1940s and 1950s that any significant changes started to happen.

In those early days, there was no electricity, and the island was not yet known for the rich culture, art, or architectural landmarks that might draw tourists. It was a quiet and isolated place, with the Atis living in harmony with nature, far from the bustling cities. That all began to change when, in the 1970s, a few adventurous backpackers stumbled upon the island. Their tales of Boracay’s untouched beauty and pristine beaches soon began to spread, and word started to get out.

The turning point came in the 1980s when a German travel writer named Jens Peter published a book about his experiences on the island. In it, he described Boracay as the “most beautiful island in Asia” and showcased its stunning landscapes with photographs he’d taken around the island. He even created postcards to share its beauty with the world. This sparked a wave of backpackers who flocked to the island, eager to experience its charm for themselves.

What started as a quiet hideaway for a few adventurous souls eventually grew into one of the Philippines’ top tourist destinations. As its popularity soared, Boracay transformed into a paradise that attracted people from all over the globe, all drawn by the allure of its white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and laid-back atmosphere.
