Project 3 Reflection:
The public audience article I crafted represents a combination of the previous research I conducted for my literature review and my knowledge 0n medical anthropology. For this project, I chose to write a feature because my topic centers around emerging shifts in attitudes toward alternative medicine and the complex sociocultural issues surrounding these changes. Before this project, I never considered how challenging it can be to write for a public audience. Transitioning from the writing style I had developed in my literature review was abrupt because I was unable to freely use jargon and reference niche scientific theory.Â
One aspect of this project I became fascinated with was stretching the boundaries of my anthropological knowledge to sufficiently describe the sociocultural complexities behind Eastern and Western medical systems. I consulted Dr. Carie Little Hersh, my anthropology professor, to best inform my perspective. In our discussion, I learned how to balance concisely describing TCM with being cautious to avoid disrespectfully over-distilling its practice.
The artifacts I selected for this project were my drafting process and instructor feedback. My drafting process provides insight into the preliminary research I conducted around Biomedicine and TCM. The instructor feedback includes suggestions on how to effectively communicate sources in a public audience article via hyperlinks.
