Behind the Artist
Tim Smith was born and raised in Goleta, California. Growing up Tim showed interest in the creative arts. He grew up with a passion of the ocean, and a rush for extreme sports. These sports, traveling and living in beautiful Central California fueled interests of art, such as painting, 3D design aspects, pop and street art, photography, and videography. Tim enjoyed the creative side of life, with Dos Pueblos High School and Santa Barbara City College providing an education in studio art.
In late 2008, Tim came across The Glass Shack, in Kapa’a, on the island of Kauai, owned by Kyle Doepke in Hawaii. This was Tim’s first glass blowing experience. With his first lesson showing Tim that this is the most innovative and interesting way for him, to express and show himself artistically, he loved everything about it from the beginning. Tim knew from his first hour on the torch, that “this was it.”
This “flameworking” was the art he wanted to focus on. One year later he bought supplies to set up shop. Lucky enough to have support from family all his life, Tim and his father had a small workshop built and up and running after working in his garage for 6 months. After a short while he knew this is what he wanted to do with his life. He believes glass is a special thing. He believes there are some that this art form is a true calling for and it shows in the art and how much glassblowers love the work, and time in the studio.
